Netflix Adds iPhone, iPod Touch Apps
It’s kind of anti-climactic at this point, but Netflix (NSDQ: NFLX) has extended its rental service to Apple’s iPhone and iPod Touch, four months after making its debut on the iPad. Still, it is notable, given Apple’s intentions to drop its TV subscription plans for the moment and to concentrate on putting together deals to offer 99-cent video rentals with TV programmers.
Like its existing iPad app, the iPhone/iPod touch Netflix app is free. However, the streaming service itself is available only to those with a Netflix subscription starting at $8.99.

Netflix’s move to Apple’s other mobile devices makes sense, even if the iPhone/iPod touch’s battery wouldn’t be able to run an entire feature length movie (unless it’s already plugged in, of course). Still, for a short commute or a long wait in line, subscribers who don’t lug their iPad around might appreciate it. (Though this subscriber’s attempts to run the app this morning met with repeated crashes, something that has already been mentioned by several commenters in the iTunes Store.)
The move to mobile comes as Netflix is working to build up its streaming business by providing access to more movies. Earlier this month, Netflix struck a deal with pay TV provider Epix in a deal estimated at $1 billion. Movies from the deal will begin streaming from Netflix on September 1 and include movies from Paramount, Lionsgate (NYSE: LGF) and MGM. Release
