Newsday.com’s Krenek Promoted To Editor In Chief, Newsday; Will Head Both
Debby Krenek, who led the recent switch of Newsday.com to a subscription-only site, has been rewarded with a promotion to editor in chief of Newsday and EVP-digital media. effective immediately. It’s her second stint at the top of a major New York newspaper. Krenek was EIC of the New York Daily News before she joined Newsday in 2001. She has been managing editor since 2004, adding SVP-digital media this year, and succeeds John Mancini, who resigned after five years.
In late October. Newsday.com became the largest local newspaper site to try an “exclusive benefit” model, limiting access to most content to home delivery subscribers and Optimum Online subscribers. Owner Cablevision (NYSE: CVC) estimates that between them Newsday and Optimum Online cover roughly 75 percent of Long Island households.

Tad Smith, Cablevision’s president of local news, stressed Kreneck’s blend of experience in the announcement, describing her “strong understanding of the opportunities that exist on the web, having successfully led Newsday’s digital transformation.”
