Nickelodeon Picks PlaySpan As Its Virtual Goods Payment Platform

Online games and payments platform PlaySpan has signed on another large partner: Nickelodeon Kids and Family Virtual Worlds Group. PlaySpan’s technology will power virtual transactions for Neopets, the beta Petpet Park, and the two worlds Nick currently has in development, World of Neopia and Monkey World. Kids (and their parents) will be able to buy virtual goods in the worlds via more than 80 payment methods, including PlaySpan’s prepaid cards that are sold in Blockbuster, Wal-mart and 7-Eleven. The cards, in particular, will make it that much easier for kids to spend more NeoCash, Nick’s virtual currency.

Nick says Neopets alone has 45 million registered users; it’s not clear how many of them are active, but it has a virtual mall full of merchandise for kids to customize their avatars and living spaces with. Meanwhile, the deal doesn’t extend to Addictinggames.com, Nick’s most popular casual games site, per Compete. The company split its game divisions into casual and virtual worlds units last year; the games on Addictinggames.com are all free, but the players are ripe for monetization via virtual currency. If PlaySpan can wrangle a deal to power payments for those sites, too—that is, if Nick does decide to create a new virtual currency—then it will be a major coup.
