DRM-less Music Site Jamendo Raises First Round With Hopes Of Expanding Global Presence

DRM-free music download site Jamendo has raised an undisclosed amount of first round funding from Mangrove Capital Partners. The Luxembourg-based company currently has 40,000 DRM-less music tracks under Creative Commons license.  About 3 million albums have been legally downloaded from the Jamendo platform, which currently counts 500,000 unique visitors per month, according to a posting on its official blog. In January, two-year-old Jamendo began offering its registered artists half the ad revenue the site receives.

Aside from downloads, Jamendo also bills itself as a promoter of unsigned and little-known bands through the site’s personal pages, pictures and videos. The company has mainly focused on the continental and central European music markets. But with this funding, Jamendo plans to widen its presence in North America, Brazil, India and Russia.
