Gen X, Gen Y Moms Share Interests But Use Net Differently: Survey

Proving that moms’ activities are evolving with the digital age, a new study from Bonnier Corp.‘s Parenting Group compared online behavior between Gen Y and Gen X moms and found similar interests but different uses. The Babytalk and Parenting.com publisher reported that Gen Y moms most often use the internet to connect and commune with other moms, usually through blogs, social nets and creating and sharing videos. Their Gen X predecessors, on the other hand, tend to gravitate towards task-oriented activities, such as surfing photo sites, product ratings and reviews sites and online shopping. Still, the data compiled by NewMediaMetrics suggests that these different behaviors come from one common goal, exploring child-rearing issues online. The data from 847 moms visiting Parenting.com also found:

—149 Gen Y women vs. 71 Gen X women own a blog
—160 vs. 86 read others’ blogs
—148 vs. 78 maintain an online profile
—154 vs. 96 create/share their own videos
—156 vs. 105 participate in an online community of moms
