AOL-Owned Patch Launches Two New Local Sites, Names Publisher

First, EveryBlock gets sold and now another heavily talked about hyperlocal startup has its own bit of news to announce. AOL-owned Patch is launching new sites in Summit, New Jersey and Darien, Connecticut, bringing the total number of hyperlocal sites in its network to eight. Three more are listed as “coming” on its website. Patch has also hired Gannett (NYSE: GCI) Digital ad sales director Scott Colontonio as its first regional publisher. AOL (NYSE: TWX) purchased Patch in June as part of an effort to focus on the local space. AOL CEO Tim Armstrong was an early investor in Patch and Patch CEO Jon Brod has since been tapped to head up AOL Ventures.
Right now, Patch only operates sites in New Jersey, New York and Connecticut, but AOL has hinted that a bigger expansion is on the way. For instance, in announcing the purchase, Armstrong said that Patch had received requests to open sites in 39 states. Release.
