Politico Owner Launching a Local DC Site; Jim Brady Running It

Politico’s owner is not content with decimating Washington Post‘s franchise of politics coverage, but is now going after where it may hurt most: local coverage. Allbritton Communications is working on launching a local DC site, we have confirmed from sources, first reported by TNR.com earlier this evening. It has hired Jim Brady, former online exec editor of, where else, WaPo, and currently consulting editor with Guardian America, though his six month consulting contract with the company is about to end. The local site, as TNR.com describes it, will be a mix of original stories and aggregation, with a heavy component of social media and user-gen, if Brady’s background and current evangelism on his Twitter account is any indication.

I was at an evening panel earlier today at NYU where Politico exec editor Jim Vandehei was speaking, and I asked him about the new site, and he had no comment on it. Meanwhile, no word yet on who, if anyone, will now be running Guardian America editorially, though the reporters do function pretty independently as we understand it. The company recently announced abandoning its GuardianAmerica.com page strategy, and focusing on its U.S. index page instead.

Disclosure: Our publisher ContentNext is a wholly owned subsidiary of Guardian News & Media. Jim Brady is one of our Leading Voices contributors.
