Microsoft’s Search Share Up, Google Down In June

The latest evidence that Microsoft’s Bing is off to a successful start: Web analytics firm StatCounter says Microsoft’s share of the search market was up 0.5 percentage points to 8.23 percent last month. Google’s meanwhile actually dropped slightly from 79.07 percent to 78.48 percent. “Steady if not spectacular might be the best way to describe performance to date,” says StatCounter CEO Aodhan Cullen in a statement. (In fact, StatCounter’s numbers show that Bing actually peaked at 9.21 percent shortly after its launch. For a day it even surpassed Yahoo (NSDQ: YHOO) in market share). comScore’s monthly figures are the most closely watched—although those are unlikely to come until mid-July. —Microsoft’s share of paid clicks is up about 13 percent, according to Efficient Frontier.
—Microsoft managed to increase its search penetration and its share of search results for two straight weeks, according to Compete.com. Compete hasn’t put out new data since then.
—While search penetration may be up, the number of queries per searcher is also up, according to Compete. That’s a sign that people are trying Bing out, although they may not be giving up their old search engines quite yet.
—Good news for Bing’s advertisers: A study showed that on average, 42 percent of Bing searchers looked at sponsored links, while just 25 percent did on Google.
