Salon Lays Off Six From Edit, About 20 Percent of Staff

Salon Media, the parent of Salon.com, has laid off six editorial staff, which is about 20 percent of its staff. The rumor first surfaced on Gawker and later confirmed by company CEO Richard Gingras to them. These include three editors, one writer, one photo editor, and one producer.

Thus continues the epic (at least in years) struggle of Salon to survive, in face of declining revenues and stagnating traffic. In terms of relevance, strangely, it is doing OK, and editor Joan Walsh seems to be on TV every five minutes these days, jarringly fighting every other talking head on cable news shows. The site is relaunching with a new design and easier backend CMS this fall, the company says.
