Set-Top Maker Roku Joins MLB.TV Roster

Pretty soon, it will be easier to write about which devices and services aren’t carrying MLB.TV. The latest to go major league is Roku, the $99 HD set-top box. Over the next few days, Roku users who also subscribe to MLB.TV Premium will be able to use the device to watch live out-of-market games in HD quality on TV at no additional cost. They’ll also be able to get local market or nationally televised games about 90 minutes after they end, plus access archive games for seven days.
It’s yet another option for people who want to get their baseball fix without subscribing to cable or satellite. Roku subs who like baseball won’t make a big dent in either but add it all together and in a season or two, the multichannel video operators could start to feel the crunch. MLB.TV is on Boxee, iPhone and iTouch and soon to be on BlackBerry. Meanwhile. MLB.TV is cranking out deals for live in-market streaming.
Roku, which already has content deals with Netflix (NSDQ: NFLX)—an investor, Amazon (NSDQ: AMZN) and Blip.TV, just added nearly $8.4 million in funding from Menlo Ventures.
