By Jane Martinson and Jason Deans: Will Lewis has been pushed out of the Telegraph Media Group after a disagreement with chief executive Murdoch MacLennan over the future direction of the publisher, MediaGuardian.co.uk can reveal.

The shock departure comes just a month after Lewis, editor in chief and managing director, digital, accepted the newspaper of the year prize at the British Press Awards for the Telegraph’s MPs’ expenses expose, which he was responsible for. The Telegraph dominated the 2010 awards, winning six for its MPs’ expenses coverage.

Lewis was replaced as Daily Telegraph editor six months ago by his then deputy, Tony Gallagher, a former Daily Mail (LSE: DMGT) executive. Speculation at the time suggested that Lewis was the victim of a power grab by MacLennan, who had staffed Telegraph Media Group with former colleagues from his previous employer, Daily Mail publisher Associated Newspapers.

Lewis remained editor-in-chief as well as heading a new entrepreneurial digital unit based in Euston. The group said last November that the Euston Project would have a budget of “millions” to start up the new digital business, and a staff of 50. He was full of plans to reinvent a business hit, like other newspaper publishers, by a switch to online readership and falling ad revenues. Full coverage at Guardian.co.uk...
