Today’s standout standout but still small digital number from earnings reports: CBS (NYSE: CBS) Publishing aka Simon & Schuster reports a roughly 233 percent increase in digital publishing revenue for Q1, to $12 million from $3.6 million. The surge comes on higher digital sales of e-books, audio downloads and stand-alone apps, according to the CBS Q1 earnings. No specifics. S&S has six paid iPhone apps ranging from $0.99 for the Star Trek: Klingon Phrase Book to $4.99 for 365 Crossword Puzzles and Pimsleuer: Russian 2Go. The publisher also has two $5.99 iPad apps but that wouldn’t have figured in Q1.

Based on Q1 numbers, digital now makes up 7.9 percent of S&S revenue. The increasing opportunities in the digital marketplace should push the revenues and the percentage up in coming quarters but will it be replacement or additive? This time the higher contribution from digital helped offset a 6 percent revenue drop to $151.7 million from $161.7 million. S&S Chief Digital Officer Elinor Hirschhorn explained the company’s strategy at our paidContent2010 conference earlier this year. Check out the video embedded below.
