Slate Readying New Business Site ‘The Big Money’

Online magazine Slate, which said last year that it would launch a business site, plans to call its new venture The Big Money. Editor James Ledbetter told Reuters that the site would appeal to people interested in economic and financial issues, but who don’t necessarily work in the financial services industry. And given that it’s coming out of Slate, the site will adopt a tone of “wit and irreverence”. It’s still not clear what domain it will be on—parent company The Washington Post (NYSE: WPO) has registered the name Slateb.com, while TheBigMoney.com appears to be owned by a marketing group. No official launch is set, though the report reiterates the early word that it will hit this summer. Given all the market tumult, the launch either comes at a terrible time or a perfect time. Ledbetter has been a contributor to Slate and is also the author of a book chronicling the demise of the magazine The Industry Standard.
