Sony Online Entertainment Cuts 5 Percent Of Workforce
Sony’s online games unit has laid off 41 employees, or five percent of its workforce, we have confirmed with the company. A Sony (NYSE: SNE) Online Entertainment representative tells IndustryGamers that the layoffs are designed to “increase operational efficiency and reduce costs.”
Sony Online Entertainment recently had a big hit in new 3D virtual world Free Realms. Sony, however, has been restructuring all of its businesses in response to falling profits across the company. Sony said in December that it would cut 8,000 full-time employees and 8,000 part-timers by 2010—and in March it said it would “accelerate those actions.”
