Sony BMG CEO Says Company Plans Subscription Music Service

Look at us, we’re planning one too… Sony (NYSE: SNE) BMG wants to get into the subscription music game. CEO Rolf Schmidt-Holtz told German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, summarized by Reuters, that his company has such a service in the works, although the timeline is still unspecified. And most of the other details remain sketchy: Schmidt-Holtz said the service is intended to work with all music players, including Apple’s (NSDQ: AAPL) iPod, although subscription music services inherently require some DRM. He did say that there may be an option to keep some songs indefinitely. As for the breadth of the library, there are talks with other other parties, as well as mobile operators, though this part is vague too. Pricing would be a typical $9-$12 per month.

Note that this came out just one week after a report surfaced saying Apple was cooking up its own subscription music service. Because it would be the first such service to work with the ubiquitous iPod, such an offering could significantly elevate this model.

This idea is so lame! Why would anyone sign up for a BMG subscription service if the same content is available together with other labels through Real, Itunes, Yahoo, Napster etc?

This is typical old-school thinking from the music industry.
