Sony’s Preparing A Video Download Service Tied To PS3 and PSPs; Again?

Another attempt by Sony, another wave of yawns across the industry: WSJ reports that Sony is planning to use PS3 and PSP, along with its Bravia HD TVs, to develop video and music download services, citing sources. We’ve heard the same string of words many time before from Sony, so not sure what’s new this time.

Last week Sony officially announced it was closing its failed Connect music service, and that its new line of Walkmans will support video for the first time (not in ATRAC, but in Windows Media Audio (WMA), as well as the more open AAC and MP3 music formats). And then, WSJ end the story with this: “The people privy to Sony’s plans also say Mr. Stringer, over the protests of some executives, personally enforced a decision to adopt certain digital rights management software that will eventually be used in all of Sony’s products. That is an indication of how serious he is about making sure the company’s various units come together to make this strategy a success, they say.” Right. Excuse me if I sound too cynical…
