SpiralFrog Signs Distribution Deal With EMI
SpiralFrog, the ad-funded free music and video download site, has signed a distribution deal with UK-based label EMI, giving it access to the content of two of the four major US labels, reports AP. It signed a similar licensing agreement with Universal Music Group before it launched last September. Together, the two music labels account for 39.9 percent of album sales in the US, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The company, which needs as much content as it can to create the size of audience advertisers would consider appealing, has been pounding away to sign labels to their service.
Chairman and founder Joe Mohen said in a statement he was “ecstatic” over the EMI deal, adding that it would “fuel” growth at the six-month old service. EMI’s roster includes Coldplay, Keith Urban, Nora Jones and Lenny Kravitz among others. SpiralFrog claims they are now the third largest legal download site for music and video by registered users and “will clearly have most major label content” on their site by “the end of the year,” according to Mohen. He also said SpiralFrog was in talks with other labels, but declined to say whether they were Sony (NYSE: SNE) BMG or Warner Music Group (NYSE: WMG). SpiralFrog is not compatible with iTunes, and will only work on a limited number of music devices running Microsoft’s (NSDQ: MSFT) Windows software.
