Starz Expands Multi-Platform Movie, TV Offerings; Extends Deals

Eventually multi-platform movie and TV deals will be routine, not something to fuss over. We aren’t there yet, which is why Starz Entertainment’s announcement today about movie agreements with five major studios is worth mentioning here. Starz has extended first-run output deals with Sony (NYSE: SNE) Pictures Television and Disney-ABC Domestic Television, and has acquired the rights to roughly 1,200 “top” movie titles and TV series from the libraries of Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution, MGM Worldwide Television Group and Universal Pictures. The John Malone-backed has renewed the deals for three more years and is around $800 million, reports THR.

Starz will have a 15- to 18-month first window on each title, followed by a second window after the basic cable and broadcast premieres. The agreements cover its 16 linear channels, HD, Starz On Demand, Starz Play and broadband download service Vongo. This isn’t new for Starz, which was early when it came to negotiating multi-platform into its agreements. Release.
