Updated: Stealth Social Net Masala Gets $4.5 Million First Round Funding
Updated below
Masala, a still-in-stealth San Francisco-based social networking startup, has raised $4.5 million in its first round of funding. The round was led by VantagePoint Venture Partners, according to a regulatory filing, picked up by PEHub. The company is run by onetime Sevin Rosen Funds partner Amra Tareen.
Nikhil adds: Now there’s some history behind the domain Masala.com: back in 1995, Om Malik had co-founded Masala, which was a portal for a South Asian magazine of the same name. The domain registration remains with SAJA co-founder MK Srinivasan...the domain registration record was last updated on April 30 2007.
Update: Sahad informs me that PEHub got the URL wrong: The correct URL is Masalainc.com. [via Mercury News]

Judging by the name (Masala) and the partner the name of Amra Tareen, I presume this is a social networking site aimed towards Desis/Indians.

Masala is a cute name for a social networking site if you are indian (or like me understand the indian culture) but NO One else is going to understand what Masala means or how it ties to the name.
C- for the name
