Success Magazine Wins Six Month Battle To Own ‘Success.com’ Domain
As it prepares to relaunch its print version next week, small biz title Success magazine has prevailed in a bid to own the domain “Success.com.” The magazine site, which had been operating under the url “Successmagazine.com” fought for six months to buy the Success.com domain from an individual who had registered it in the early 1990s, Darren Hardy, the magazine’s publisher and editorial director, told me. The process was complicated because American Express wanted the domain for its “1-800-Success” branding campaign. Hardy wouldn’t say how much his company ultimately paid for the domain or who was the individual that registered it, noting only that “It certainly cost us a lot to have American Express on the other end of this.”
The desire to own Success.com was based on the Dallas-based publisher’s plans to use the site as a hub for a number of its enterprise ventures, including book publishing, events and eventually, a social network aimed at entrepreneurs.
