Here’s why Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) is launching a “completely new smartphone OS.” The latest smartphone platform market share figures were released today by comScore and Microsoft posted the steepest drop. The new Windows Phone 7 Series—due later this year—can’t come to market soon enough.

  • How much competition will Windows 7 Series cell phone be for iPhone? It was a trending topic all day on Twitter http://bit.ly/duxQxg

  • It is interesting to see that Nokia is not even mentioned. They claim to have the largest share of the Smartphone market. However, I never see a true “mobile warrior” using Nokia phones. Not even the N-Series ones.

its simple , apple has a brand that people want . Microsoft does not no OS is ever going to fix this.

They better be concerned. They will be totally out of the mobile distribution game in 5 years at this rate. If that’s where the web is headed, it’s going there without Microsoft.

  • Microsoft should be concerned.

I have been extremely disappointed with Microsoft mobile unit not because of the technology - it is far more superior than iPhone app development. I’m disappointed at how Microsoft approached the mobile developer strategy with inept leadership who could not execute a vision or solutions in the fashion Apple has done so successfully.

This whole “clean slate” mess don’t bode well with me because they scapegoated their mobile platform instead of their inept mobile leadership. I’m waiting to see how serious MSFT are with mobile developers in terms of leadership, not technology with this next release…

I doubt they’re concerned. Honestly they could probably care less. Since WP7 is a completely new platform, they are essentially starting from 0% market share come this holiday season. Also, it’s only natural for share of current WM to go down. Why would anyone buy a WM phone now when WP7 is not too far off.
