After 32 years,Time Inc. will close Southern Accents with the September/October 2009 issue, the company said. The mag’s website, SouthernAccents.com, will remain alive, at least for now. The mag’s ad pages declined 37.4 percent during the first half of the year, according to figures from the Publishers Information Bureau. Update: NYP says about 20 people will lose jobs as a result.

Southern Accents was acquired from W.R.C. Smith Publishing Co. in 1985 by the Southern Progress Corp., which itself became a subsidiary of Time Inc. that same year. The magazine,  which came out six times a year, covered stories ranging from shelter to travel, categories that have been hard hit by the recession and the pullback in ad spending.

Rafat adds: Likely Time Inc will close more magazines from its portfolio as the review continues. One that has long been on the bubble; Entertainment Weekly; its fate may be a closed print and EW.com to continue. Others likely would be from its luxury magazine portfolio, including Coastal Living, Sunset, and Time Style & Design, and others such as This Old House, Southern Living, and All You.
