More changes at Zell-owned Tribune, which recently announced fresh job cuts… Ann Marie Lipinski, editor since early 2001, has announced her resignation. She will be replaced by Gerould Kern, a veteran of the paper, and current Tribune Publishing VP, according to the paper. Lipinski, whose last day will be Thursday, told staff that the position was no longer “the fit it once was.” Since Zell has taken over, there have been shakeups across the Tribune empire, and with the heavy debt load, the urgency to make changes now has only heightened. Her resignation memo offers the familiar line, that the new owners deserves to have their own, chosen editor, who will help pursue their goals.

imageUpdate: Staci adds: I was in the middle of adding a note that David Hiller was expected to be next when it became official ... Hiller, who outlasted numerous editors, a lot of staffers and the people who sent him to LA, is out as publisher of the LA Times. Kevin Roderick has the memo from ZellCo’s Randy Michaels: “We are already in the process of identifying the right person to lead The Times going forward. We expect to name a new publisher by the end of the summer. In the meantime, executive vice president and chief administrative officer Gerry Spector and I will oversee all operations at The Times.”

And this from Hiller via LAObserved : Sam’s the boss and he gets to pick his own quarterback.”
