Twitter Adds More Geo Data To Tweets

Twitter is zeroing in with its location plans. The company says in a blog post that users will now be able to tag their tweets as coming from a specific location—like a soccer stadium or restaurant—instead of just a general neighborhood or city. The feature will also tie-in to check-in services like Foursquare and Gowalla so that when users of those services publish their activity to Twitter, a “Twitter place” will be associated with them. That means people who look up a specific location on Twitter will be able to see recent check-ins there as well as Tweets coming from there.

For now, Twitter says the feature is useful because it “helps to know where a Tweet is coming from—is that person watching the game on TV or is he actually in the stadium?” It’s not too far-fetched though to think that the data could also be useful as company’s ad model evolves.

Twitter says the feature is possible thanks to partnerships with TomTom and Localeze. It also sounds like it could be related to its acquisition late last year of geolocation startup Mixer Labs, which included among its services what it called a “places finder” which took a specific location and compared it to a database of busineses and points of interest.
