Twitter—which is still trying to do a better job of making itself accessible to the new Tweeter—is redesigning its home page for the second time in less than a year. Notably, the new design includes a prominent box addressed to those “New To Twitter.” Other features include an always-refreshing list of “Top tweets,” scrolling trending topics as well as mugs of popular Tweeters.

All seemingly minor changes, until you realize that the current home page features a big search box, a “sign up now” button—and little else—and that itself was a step up from an earlier iteration. Not so inviting.

It has been awhile since we’ve seen metrics showing Twitter’s poor retention rate—but, on the company’s blog, Twitter Creative Director Doug Bowman acknowledges that while “people who internalize the value of Twitter understand the power of this simple medium,” “it hasn’t been easy to make that value transparent or obvious for curious folks coming to Twitter for the first time.”

He describes the new page as a “work-in-progress” and says the company will “continually try new ideas that help users more easily discover who and what they can find on Twitter.”
