Video: Arkansas Democrat-Gazette’s Hussman: ‘If Online Paid As Well As Print, I’d Junk The Press’

While the topic of paywalls are all the rage right now, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette has had its paywall up since 2001. The goal has always been to build up the print side, while locking much of its content behind a subscription wall. In an interview with CNN Money (via Fitz&Jen), owner/publisher Walter Hussman Jr. said that his attachment to the print product is not at all sentimental. It’s just that print drives more revenues than online. If the web paid as much as print, Hussman says, “I’d be willing to junk the press.”

Paywalls will be one of the hot topics at our upcoming paidContent 2010, Feb. 19 in New York. We’re nearing a sellout but you can still register.
