Virgin Media Launches; Hopes Portal Will Compete With Biggest

Virgin Media—the new name of UK cable company NTL Telewest— has relaunched with a big band rebranding campaign in UK today. The company is also launching Virgin Central, its interactive TV channel, on the back of deals with distributors such as Buena Vista and Alliance Atlantis.
It has also launched the online portal, VirginMedia.com, which it hopes will be among the biggest general portals in UK, competing against biggies like Yahoo, MSN and others. More details in this Guardian story.
NMA: It launches this week with a 1 million GBO online ad campaign as it goes head-to-head with MSN and Yahoo to become the UK’s top entertainment portal. Virginmedia.com will become the central portal, competing against established portals along with other ambitious media companies, like Orange, looking to boost their portal presence
