Updated: Washington Post, Bloomberg Team Up For New Syndication Service; Co-Branded Business Page

The Washington Post and Bloomberg News are launching a new syndication service Jan. 1, 2010—the Washington Post (NYSE: WPO) News Service with Bloomberg News, which will provide daily content from the paper and the financial newswire to newspapers, website and other subs. The move follows by a day the news that the paper’s partnership with the Tribune Co.‘s Los Angeles Times was dissolving. The LAT will become part of McClatchy-Tribune Information Services (MCT), a JV of McClatchy (NYSE: MNI) and Tribune. (Release after the jump.) 

Dual-branded business page: The bolder—and much riskier—move is a co-branded Bloomberg and WaPo online business-news page, which will replace the paper’s own business page when users click on the “Business” tab. WaPo Executive Editor Marcus Brauchli explained the move in a staff memo: “Each of these steps will benefit The Post’s newsroom. The new, dual-branded business news page, which readers will find when they click on the “Business” tab of our home page, will continue to showcase our business and economic stories. It also will display the latest corporate, market and other global business news from Bloomberg, giving readers a much more comprehensive package than we do today. This arrangement will enable us to continue our focus on the kinds of ambitious stories that have defined our business coverage in recent months ... We’ll still cover Washington business closely, too.”

Real-time news: The partnership continues Bloomberg’s newspaper outreach program; it recently became the first to license a real-time full content feed from the New York Times for the Bloomberg Professional service with 300,000-plus users. This deal includes a similar license for WaPo’s entire content, including the breaking news alerts that are seen as valuable to traders and others who use Bloomberg terminals.

WASHINGTON, D.C.—October 1, 2009—The Washington Post and Bloomberg will launch a global news service, The Washington Post News Service with Bloomberg News, which will offer 120 stories a day from The Post and BLOOMBERG NEWS® stories to newspapers, Web sites and other subscribers daily.

The Post, the leading source of news about Washington, and Bloomberg, the world’s most influential financial news organization, will also produce a co-branded Web-based business news page on washingtonpost.com, incorporating content from the Post and from the BLOOMBERG.COM® Web site. In addition, the Post’s entire news content, including breaking-news alerts, will be available in real time as part of the BLOOMBERG PROFESSIONAL® service, which is the world’s leading source of data, news and analytics with more than 300,000 users.

The Washington Post News Service with Bloomberg News will be available starting January 1, 2010 to news organizations around the world.  With 120 stories available daily, the service will offer an expansive selection of news across topics to subscribers along with photos, graphics and other story elements.
