An interesting acquisition by Washingtonpost.Newsweek Interactive, the online arm of the WaPo company, and possibly a pre-cursor of more such smaller local deals to come: it has bought out ShopDC, a Washington, DC shopping and fashion newsletter and website guide founded by MBA student Zoey Rawlins. It has now been relaunched as DC Scout. Financials of the deal were not disclosed.
A former University of Maryland MBA student, Rawlins will use some of the proceeds to benefit student entrepreneurs at the b-school she graduated from. Interesting story: Rawlins created ShopDC two years ago while working toward her MBA and with $7,000 in startup funding from the school. She has now joined WPNI as its brand manager for the online product.
