With AOL Spinoff, TMZ To Move To Time Warner/Telepictures, As Expected; $25M 2008 Revenues
As we have been reporting for a while, celeb powerhouse site TMZ will now be part of Time Warner, after operating as a JV between AOL and Warner Bros-owned Telepictures for a while. First TMZ took ad sales away from AOL earlier this summer, and now as part of AOL spinoff from Time Warner, the details are official. From the amended SEC filing by AOL today: “Telepictures will assume responsibility for all of TMZ’s ongoing operations. Under the terms of the amended Memorandum of Understanding, we will provide online distribution to TMZ for a fee. This distribution arrangement will terminate on the earlier of December 31, 2010 or the date 12 months after the date AOL is no longer wholly-owned by Time Warner (NYSE: TWX). In addition, we will provide hosting services to TMZ under the Master Services Agreement for ATDN and Hosting Services between Time Warner and us.” Which means TMZ really wants to cut off the ties with AOL after 12 months of spinoff.
Also, a public disclosure of TMZ’s revenues for the first time: “Subject to certain performance adjustments and the reimbursement of expenses, revenues are split evenly between the parties. Telepictures received payments of $6.2 million for the nine months ended September 30, 2009, and $12.7 million, $9.6 million and $3.0 million in 2008, 2007 and 2006, respectively.” Which means TMZ’s revenues for 2008 were $25.4 million, and slated to be much smaller this year, with revenues of $12.4 million in first three quarter of this year (we guessed earlier this year that its revenues are in the $15 million range.)
