Yahoo’s Latest Reorg Is Official: Three New Teams Reporting To Decker With Schneider Heading U.S.
As had been anticipated, Yahoo (NSDQ: YHOO) has announced yet another reorganization. In a move designed to “leverage”, “accelerate”, “monetize” and “enhance” (all Jerry Yang’s words), the company is centralizing consumer product development, establishing a US-focused unit designed to bring products to market faster, and formed an “insights strategy team.” It also announced a slew of new titles, necessary since there’s been so much turnover. The company denies that this is some knee-jerk response to any sudden turmoil, real or perceived. Sue Decker’s statement: “We have planned these changes deliberately over the past several months to clarify responsibilities and to capitalize on the scale advantages while allowing for fine tuning to meet local market needs.” Release.

Key names and titles:
The following three units will report to President Sue Decker
—Ash Patel will lead an Audience Products Division, which is responsible for company-wide product strategy and product management. Previously, Patel had managed Yahoo’s Platforms & Infrastructure group
—Hilary Schneider will head go-to market activity in the US. She previously headed up the company’s Global Partner Solutions unit. Scott Moore, head of Yahoo Media Group, is staying for now and will report to her.
—The head of a new Insights Strategy team is as of yet un-named. This division will play a role in one of Yahoo’s key efforts and longstanding challenges: the unification of strategy and understanding across its myriad platforms.
The other half of the reorg is on the technical side of things, all under CTO Ari Balogh:
—Venkat Panchapakesan will lead new Audience Technology Group, including consumer-facing platforms.
—Prabhakar Raghavan will head search strategy.
—Tuoc Luong is the interim leader of the search product team.
—David Ku will head the advertising product team, which is within search.
Units not affected by the reorg: Marketing Products Division, Connected Life and Corporate Marketing.
Staci adds: In a move all too reminiscent of the late 2006 reorg, Yahoo once again is announcing major changes without a key person in place. In 2006, the new structure was supposed to include an audience head—a job the company tried to fill externally and failed. Eventually, it became splintered with much of the role going to Jeff Weiner. This time, the gap is at the head of the new Insights Strategy team, the group that is supposed to “assume responsibility for centralizing and executing a common strategy for the use of data and analysis across Yahoo.” Today’s announcement includes a promise to name the group’s leader within the next few weeks.
Update: Kara Swisher reports that Scott Dietzen will take over the job of SVP Brad Garlinghouse, running all communications and community properties and products under Patel. (Which goes a long way toward explaining Garlinghouse’s departure, not official until end of summer, says Kara..) Dietzen was president and CTO of Zimbra, acquired by Yahoo last fall. Also, CNET (NSDQ: CNET) notes that Tapan Bhat, who runs Buzz, My Yahoo, and the Yahoo.com main page, will be in position to report to Patel.
