Yahoo Readying A Women’s Content Site

Amidst all this craziness surrounding Yahoo (NSDQ: YHOO) bid and its own layoffs, the company is still trying to, well, work: it is about to launch a women’s site, reports Jon Fine at BW...it is aimed at women between the ages of 25 and 54, and from the sound of it, may bring together various elements that Yahoo already has in its sub-sites, with fashion and beauty, entertainment, health, astrology, home, food, parenting, relationships, and work and money. No decision on a name yet, but a name in contention is Shine, the story says.

The new site’s editor-in-chief will be Brandon Holley, who came to Yahoo in November, 2007, after stints as top editor of the now-defunct magazines Elle Girl and Jane...it has a staff of about 12.

Lots of activity in the woman’s space: Wowowow is launching this weekend, then IAC (NSDQ: IACI) is expected to launch a woman’s site too.

: Yahoo has been working on this strategy for months. When I interviewed Scott Moore after he was handed the entertainment properties back in December, he was undoing his own ideas about needing niche sites: “We couldn’t just keep launching smaller sites. We couldn’t just keep adding sites like food or tech or that kind of thing indefinitely. We need to chunk things up into larger areas.” Talks of a lifestyle mini-portal precede that. Yahoo wants to draw the biggest crowds it can and keep them within the site as long as possible. But will it bring in new traffic or just help channel current users?

  • I think it's pretty good news that yahoo tries to target women. The yahoo portal is one of the top websites in the world and for many, it's a lot easier to find content from there than from searching google. I already love their recipe database and all their other websites, hopefully this one will work too!
