YouTube Praises Itself On Its Google Birthday

Google’s attempts to turn around negative perceptions of its $1.6 billion purchase of YouTube continue: In a post marking the three year anniversary of the deal, YouTube co-founder Chad Hurley praises the site’s “tenets” and announces it now gets “well over a billion views a day.” The post is headlined “Y,000,000,000uTube”—and to make sure that all those video viewers know just how big YouTube really is, a “1 BN” has been affixed to the YouTube logo across the site. It’s certainly a milestone worth noting, but let’s remember that so far YouTube has not been a success for Google (NSDQ: GOOG) as a business. And, indeed, there are those two other “one billion” milestones that YouTube likely does not want to shout: The $1 billion Google CEO Eric Schmidt has admitted the company paid for YouTube in excess of what it thought the site was worth and the $1 billion copyright infringement lawsuit YouTube still faces from Viacom (NYSE: VIA). (To be fair, YouTube tried to “bust” questions about its financial performance in a separate blog post earlier this summer).
