ZeniMax Buys Game Developer id Software

ZeniMax Media has purchased id Software, the studio behind games like Doom, Quake, and Wolfenstein, creating a company with a portfolio of top first-person shooter and role playing games. ZeniMax is a publisher and also owns the studio behind games like Fallout. It also runs ZeniMax Online Studios, which develops multi-player online games. id Software co-founder John Carmack tells Kotaku that his company—which depended on other firms to market its titles—was “getting kind of tired competing with our own publishers in terms of how our titles will be featured ... So the idea of actually becoming a publisher and merging ... [is ideal.]” Todd Hollenshead, the CEO of id Software, also says in a statement that his company will now have “financial and business resources to support the future growth of id Software.”

Both companies are privately held and financial details are not being released. However, Providence Equity Investors invested $300 million in ZeniMax two years ago. At the time, ZeniMax said it would use some of the funds for acquisitions and this is ZeniMax’s highest profile purchase since then. Release.
