Planned Baltimore Online News Outlet Will Rely On Volunteers

One trend that’s continuing into 2007: experiments in so-called citizen journalism. The Baltimore Bulldog, an interactive news site debuting this spring, will combine blogging and citizen journalism with professional reporting, Mediapost reports. The venture is the brainchild of Sean Carton, chief strategy officer for Charm City online consultancy idfive. Carton has also enlisted partners Fern Shen, a former reporter with the Washington Post and Baltimore Sun,  and Marc Steiner, a host on Baltimore public radio station WYPR. In addition to all the usual text/audio/video features, the Bulldog will also post “instant restaurant reviews” from text messages sent by patrons at local restaurants. It also will partner with local bloggers and established area names for columns and other coverage. As for the business model, the Bulldog is designated as a non-profit and has received a $5,000 grant from the Abell Foundation to create a prototype. And in true citizen journalism spirit, reporters have offered to work for free, at least initially.
