Cartoons Get Serious Online

WSJ weighs in on how cartoons are on the way to becoming a viable business online…especially with the political season and parodies like JibJab.

The cartooning establishment, known for being slow to change, is becoming aware of the burgeoning industry in online political animation. Syndicates like United Media, a subsidiary of E.W. Scripps, have approached online cartoonists about distributing their work on the Web.

The story is slightly off the mark, if you ask me. Efforts such as the one by Scott McCloud, and sites such as Modern Tales, BitPass (payment provider popular among the web comics community), have been all about developing business models online…so to say that online cartoons have yet to prove itself as a viable business model is to have blinkers on, or only look at it from a big media perspective…
