Updated: Showtime Networks, owned by CBS Corp, is following Turner’s lead in launching Gametap in 2005, and is launching a broadband gaming service joint venture called “On Broadband”. The JV is with game publisher Broadband Libraries, and the new company will offer a private label game service for cable TV companies and DSL broadband providers, reports AP. One key difference between On Broadband and Gametap: the former is a B2B service aimed as a white label service, while Gametap is a direct consumer service.
The service, expected to launch in the second quarter of this year, will offer a collection of games and games-related content for downloads and online play. Some offerings will be free and some available for purchase. A subscription option will also be available.
Peter von Schlossberg of Broadband Libraries will serve as the joint venture’s GM.
