Starz Forms Overture Films; Studio Will Produce, Acquire “Quality” Films

With a business model that relies on OPM (other people’s movies), Starz LLC continues to look for ways to produce its own content. The latest is Overture Films, announced today. The studio with produce, acquire and distribute 8-12 full-length feature films annually. From the release: “The studio will form collaborative relationships with film-makers and empower them to produce quality films that take creative risks and break new ground.” Starz is a unit of Liberty Media; LA-based Overture Films joins Starz Entertainment (the networks and download service Vongo) and Starz Media (created by acquisition of IDT Entertainment).—Overture’s CEO is Chris McGurk, who had been advising Starz on new media; the COO is Danny Rosett. Both were at MGM when it was sold in 2005; McGurk was vice chairman and COO from 1999-2005. The two are aiming for 60 percent original, 40 percent acquired. The studio starts with a multi-year deal with Starz for distribution through the networks, Vongo and home video.
