"The domino is going to fall," IAC chairman Barry Diller predicted. How fast and how hard, we don't exactly know, but the television market is ripe for change.

The wall that broadcasters and cable companies have built around their services is not long for this world, according to Barry Diller, chairman of IAC. It’s not clear who will tear it down, and it’s not clear when it will actually happen, but the “centricity” of the video world is going to shift from cable and satellite to the internet, he said at D11 Wednesday.

Diller, of course, is doing all he can to help that along by investing in projects like Aereo, which has the established broadcasters running to the courtroom in an effort to get it shut down. Aereo allows people to purchase a digital antenna and receive over-the-air television shows, and as we’ve covered extensively, broadcasters are not happy that Aereo isn’t paying them for that right.

“Cable is a great closed system where the masses, now 100 million subscribers of cable, support ESPN that is only watched by 10 percent. That’s a great little plot so long as you can keep everybody inside the closed circle,” Diller said. “We’re out to get the centricity moved to the internet.”

Several days after Diller’s comments, an ESPN spokeswoman reached out in hopes of contradicting his statement on viewership. “Based on 4th Quarter 2012 data for five measured ESPN networks: 88% of households that can receive ESPN networks tune in to one or more of the networks. In 4th Quarter 2012, ESPN networks reached 89 million households and over 200M persons 2+ in those households – about two-thirds of the U.S. population,” the spokeswoman said in a statement, citing data from Nielsen and including viewership of ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNNEWS, ESPNU, and ESPN Deportes.

CNN’s Jeff Zucker, who was billed as a joint speaker alongside Diller but wound up playing second fiddle to questions for Diller, agreed that a shift will take place but wasn’t totally sure, as might be expected given the company that pays his bills, that it would happen all that quickly. Still, “at the end of the day we don’t care which platform you get your information from,” he said, emphasizing CNN’s digital products.

Younger folks are the ones who are going to make this happen, according to Diller. “I think that young people that don’t now subscribe to cable are maybe going to think of Aereo as an alternative because they don’t want to pay 100 bucks a month for cable,” he said.

Which tech companies will make this happen? Diller listed Apple (“I don’t think it’s some big secret that they’ve been working for years on trying to solve television”), Amazon and Microsoft.

This post was updated June 3rd after an ESPN spokeswoman sought to clarify Diller’s remarks.

Twitter CEO Dick Costolo thinks Apple is his spirit company, news organizations shouldn't fear Twitter, and that engineers need room to experiment.

Now that it’s been a year since Facebook went public, the next big IPO circus is likely to involve Twitter. CEO Dick Costolo — as expected — didn’t announce concrete plans for such an IPO Wednesday during his appearance at D11, but held forth on a number of interesting topics during his session.

Advertising seems to be booming at Twitter (although Costolo wouldn’t share any numbers) but while Twitter is working more and more with traditional media companies, it doesn’t see the need as of yet to start creating its own news content, Costolo said.

“I see us partnering more with news organizations,” he said. He thinks of Twitter as a tool for news organizations and individuals to distribute content and while it’s messy at times, Costolo doesn’t seem to think that Twitter has a responsibility to verify the content itself; it does, however, want to help news organizations verify themselves on Twitter with better security tools. No specifics were provided, but Costolo addressed the question of security very seriously (for a guy that jokes around a lot), admitting “we haven’t moved as quickly there as we wanted to.”

Twitter has famously cracked down on how third-party developers use that content in their own apps, but Costolo claimed his company’s relationship with developers is “great.” Since the crack-down last summer, the company has certainly worked to mend relationships with developers through partnerships and integrations around Twitter Cards, which bring more content to the site. Costolo alluded to a special relationship with Yahoo over data-feed licensing but didn’t get into specifics regarding that announcement from earlier this month.

Twitter’s own developers have an interesting privilege: they’re allowed to roll out any tweak to the system that reaches one percent of users without clearance from upper management in hopes of sparking experimentation, Costolo said. That being said, what Twitter really needs is “simplicity:” it’s still too hard for new users to get the hang of Twitter, like having to put a period in front of a user name at the beginning of a tweet so your tweets reach all your followers.

He sees Apple as a “mentor company,” when it comes to that simplicity. “We like the way they think about simplicity in design.”

If the last ten years were about mobile computing, the next ten years will be about wearable computing. And as a result, the type of content we share with the internet will also change.

The photo wars aren’t over, but a shift is about to take place in terms of the content we upload and share to the internet, according to Kleiner Perkins’ Mary Meeker and her trademark Powerpoint slides at D11. After years of uploading each and every photo to the web, we’re about to start uploading personal data and sound files to the web in greater and greater numbers as wearable computing develops.

Meeker’s annual attempt to present more than 100 slides in 10 minutes is a little tough on the eyes, but a few key trends emerged Wednesday at D11 (the full deck is embedded below):

500 million photos are being uploaded and shared each day, doubling year over year as Snapchat turns into a real phenomenon. But photo-sharing is relatively mature compared to…

Video, which as Janko noted earlier today is on a tear. At the moment, video growth is being spurred by short-form video sharing like Vine and Dropcam, Meeker said.

Both of those content types, however, are relatively well understood compared to the next big wave: sound files and data from wearable computers. That’s because we’re at the cusp of a computing shift in which wearables take precedent over mobile.

Fitness and health data will be a huge percentage of that personal data, Meeker said, as more and more people realize how behavioral shifts can improve their health and how new devices can help people track those behaviors.

The platform change to wearables will help create that world, Meeker said. While the past ten years have been about mobile computing and the ten years before that were about the PC, the next ten years will be about wearable computers with sensors.

Tumblr might become part of Yahoo as early as Sunday night, according to a report that suggests Yahoo's board of directors is set to consider a $1.1 billion offer for the startup.

Tumblr’s fate could be decided Sunday by Yahoo’s board of directors. AllThingsD reported late Friday that Yahoo is closing in on a $1.1 billion deal for the site, moving quickly to cement what would be the biggest deal of CEO Marissa Mayer’s tenure at the venerable but lackluster internet pioneer.

After reporting Thursday that Yahoo was considering a number of options for Tumblr, including partnerships or strategic investments, ATD reported Friday that Mayer had decided to go all in. Om reported Thursday that Yahoo was worried about counteroffers from Facebook, much how Facebook stole Instagram from Twitter after Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey’s courtship of the photo-sharing site. Now the board plans to meet Sunday to consider giving final approval to the offer.

Tumblr’s backers will likely be pleased with a $1.1 billion price tag, especially if, as reported, it involves cash However, it’s far from certain that such an outlay would do anything to revive Yahoo’s fortunes. Mayer certainly has been trying to bring new blood into the company of late, snapping up a number of smaller mobile startups before focusing on Tumblr over the last month.

Yahoo has scheduled a press event for Monday evening in New York to discuss “something special,” but it wouldn’t hint at anything else. We’ll be there to cover the event, but in the meantime, here’s Tumblr founder and CEO David Karp’s appearance at our paidContent Live conference in April, discussing his company’s fortunes:

In just a few short years, Google I/O has evolved into one of the must-attend-or-watch events on the technology calendar.

The only constant in the modern media business is chaos. We can all agree we’re in the midst of an historic and seismic shift in which all media becomes digital, but the business models, technologies, winners and losers that will define that digital era are very much up in the air.

At paidContent Live on Wednesday in New York, we’re convening some of the people most responsible for that disruption as well as those tasked with turning big media companies on a dime. That schedule includes upstarts like Chet Kanojia, founder and CEO of Aereo, who has the old broadcasting powers scrambling to quash his innovative startup in the courtroom. It involves financiers like Lerer Ventures’ Kenneth Lerer, whose firm has backed buzzy media startups like Branch and Buzzfeed. And it features publishing veterans like Andrew Sullivan, who is attempting to remake the concept of paid content.

Looking for a new platform for blogging, and finding that existing sites aren't sufficient? You might check out Quora's new blogging platform, which it plans to release Wednesday, that will allow users to create posts on the site and share information.

Newspapers might be dying, but there is no shortage of companies who want to get into the publishing business. Or the blogging business, at least. Quora plans to announce Wednesday that it’s rolling out a new blogging platform, moving the strictly question and answer site into new territory.

“We’re not going to be a place for cat photos,” said Marc Bodnick, a product and business executive at Quora who explained the product in an interview Wednesday. “We’re not a site for light, viral, multimedia-sharing without text. We’re a site where people share ideas and thoughts. So the same type of people who write answers are going to be the same types of people who write on blogs.”

The move toward blogging represents a shift for Quora, which has so far been entirely about questions and answers that users could upvote and follow. But the site, which was launched by former Facebook CTO Adam D’Angelo in 2010, has always been about providing high-quality information to a dedicated group of readers, and in this sense the addition of blogging makes sense. Not to mention that blogging could attract a larger audience to Quora than questions and answers that require a login, setting itself up for greater advertising opportunities than it would have otherwise.

D’Angelo sat down with GigaOM earlier this month where he explained where the company is headed:

“We think at a very high level there is a lot of knowledge that is inside people’s head and is not accessible. Sure, the internet (of today) is pretty vast and big, but it is still not where we can access that knowledge that easily. So you have a blog, but a lot of people don’t have an audience or aren’t as connected and able to find the information as you. Access to that knowledge is much harder, and our goal is to make it easy. Anything you want to know, you go to Quora and get it.”

Quora executives are pushing the idea that through the new blogging platform, anyone with a good idea and smart writing can become famous on the site, even if that person doesn’t have a strong Twitter following or an existing popular blog of their own.

“You can write an answer that goes viral on the site despite no one following you,” Bodnick said.

And to a certain extent, this is true — there are indviduals, like the guy who wrote about his car breaking down in front of Steve Job’s house, who have become “Quora famous,” to an extent. Bodnick noted that some of the service’s “top writers“ get 30,000 views on a post per month, and some of the very top writers get up to 100,000.

But Quora attracts a very specific readership in a few key areas, like movies, technology, or startups, and the people who have built a dedicated Quora following seem more poised for Quora blogging success than entirely new users who write about topics that are less popular. If you’re blogging about Steve Jobs and post your writing under the Steve Jobs topic, which has thousands of existing followers, you could do well. But it seems fairly topic-specific, and hardly a guarantee of publishing fame.

There are also so many blogging platforms out there, from WordPress to Tumblr to Medium to Branch to LinkedIn, it’s hard to think how Quora’s new tools presents much for the average blogger — they seem likely to excite people who are already consistent Quora posters. But for those users, the platform could allow them to expand on ideas that aren’t posed as answers to questions, and a new rich text editor for mobile released in a few weeks will add to that experience as well.

Why do Android phone makers keep pumping out slightly different versions of smartphones with custom user interfaces that frustrate developers to no end? Because they have to, according to Motorola (NYSE: MMI) CEO Sanjay Jha.

In an interview with The Verge, Jha said “Verizon and AT&T (NYSE: T) don’t want seven stock (Android 4.0) devices on their shelves,” referring to “stock” as “not cluttered with custom skins like Motoblur and TouchWiz.” No matter what Google (NSDQ: GOOG) Chairman Eric Schmidt thinks, Android’s fragmentation problems stem from the problems that crop up when application developers have to support multiple user interfaces on top of the different screen sizes and hardware configurations that are also part and parcel of the Android world.

The problem is that wireless carriers want to have as many different kinds of phones as possible to appeal to a wide variety of customers but they also want to be able to promise those customers they can get apps for their phones. This leads to tons of generic Android phones at lower price points that promise the Android experience but of the dozens and dozens of Android phones that are available at carriers, only five or six are truly standout devices. Yet Android’s market share numbers include all those versions.

Jha said he “has to make money” in defending Motorola’s quest to differentiate itself from Samsung and HTC, which is pretty funny considering Motorola doesn’t make any money. But Jha did signal that Motorola is going take a cue from Google, which is angling to buy the company, by paring down in order to focus on doing fewer things better.
