					<p>Microsoft (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=MSFT" class="ticker" title="MSFT">NSDQ: MSFT</a>) has cleared up some of the confusion regarding its plans for Windows 8 computers that will use ARM processors, the first time the storied company has built a version of its flagship Windows PC operating system for the chip standard that dominates the mobile world. Windows 8 devices on ARM chips will be able to run a version of Microsoft Office in an operating mode that resembles older versions of Windows, but all other applications aimed at those devices will have to be designed for Microsoft&#8217;s new Metro user interface.
</p><p>With the debut of the &#8220;consumer preview&#8221; version of Windows 8 now expected later this month at Mobile World Congress, Microsoft&#8217;s Steven Sinofsky wrote <a href="http://blogs.msdn.com/b/b8/archive/2012/02/09/building-windows-for-the-arm-processor-architecture.aspx" title="an epic blog post">an epic blog post</a> Thursday on Windows 8 and ARM chips. After Microsoft introduced Windows 8 last year <a href="http://paidcontent.org/article/419-confusion-reigns-over-microsofts-plans-for-windows-8-pc-and-mobile-apps/" title="confusion rose">confusion rose</a> over whether or not applications for the ARM versions of Windows 8 devices would be able to run in the legacy &#8220;Desktop&#8221; mode, and Sinofsky used the opportunity to explain why Microsoft included that Desktop mode on the ARM version of Windows.</p>

<p>&#8220;Some have suggested we might remove the desktop from WOA (Windows on ARM) in an effort to be pure, to break from the past, or to be more simplistic or expeditious in our approach. To us, giving up something useful that has little cost to customers was a compromise that we didn’t want to see in the evolution of PCs,&#8221; Sinofsky wrote.</p>

<p>But only Microsoft will be able to write applications for that Windows Desktop experience on ARM tablets and PCs: all other developers who want to write applications for Windows ARM devices will have to write them in the Metro style, which also means they&#8217;ll have to distribute those applications through Microsoft&#8217;s Windows Store. Windows-on-ARM devices will be able to access the legacy Desktop mode from their Metro &#8220;Start&#8221; menus, but the only things they&#8217;ll be able to do in that legacy Desktop mode is run a new version of Microsoft Office (Office 15) designed for touchscreen devices and manage files in the old familiar way.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s sort of the best of both worlds for Microsoft. This approach allows it to postpone the creation of a Metro-style of Microsoft Office&#8212;perhaps the most useful set of Windows applications&#8212;until a later date while encouraging those who want to target Windows 8 devices to focus on Metro.</p>

<p>Windows 8 devices that will run on Intel (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=INTC" class="ticker" title="INTC">NSDQ: INTC</a>) and AMD&#8217;s chips will be able to run applications written for the legacy Desktop mode, but developers will be able to use the same development tools to create Metro-style user interfaces for devices using either Intel or ARM (the back-end code, of course, would need to target a particular chip). Given the trends in the computer market these days, focusing just on the Desktop user interface means you&#8217;ll be concentrating on the slow-growing portion of the market.</p>

<p>But this is a classic problem for Microsoft; during each technology transition it finds it very difficult to make a clean break from the past given the huge installed base of consumer and corporate applications that run on older technologies. Windows 8 on ARM is an important step forward in that regard, in that anyone who wants their app to run on those devices will have to suck it up and move forward at Microsoft&#8217;s speed because older applications written for Intel&#8217;s chips won&#8217;t run on the ARM devices.</p>

<p>But it seems that even Microsoft can&#8217;t do all the heavy lifting to move Office to Metro, at least not right away. That means users will have to switch back and forth between Metro and Desktop in order to access some of Microsoft&#8217;s most valuable applications, and that could be jarring, although the <a href="http://www.theverge.com/microsoft/2012/2/9/2787365/microsoft-office-15-unveiled" title="Office 15 preview shown off Thursday">Office 15 preview shown off Thursday</a> does indicate that Word and Excel, among others, have been tweaked to more closely resemble the Metro design language.</p>

<p>The company also said that its partners plan to release Windows-on-ARM devices at the same time Windows-on-Intel devices are released, dispelling some fears that the ARM version of Windows might be delayed due to the technical complexity of the project. Most industry observers think those devices are scheduled to arrive around the end of the year, perhaps in time for the holiday shopping season, but Microsoft hasn&#8217;t directly addressed a launch schedule.</p>

					<p>Is 2012 &#8220;the year of mobile?&#8221; No sir. Mobile is simply too disruptive to have just one year. After all, who remembers the year of the TV or the year of the Internet? Talk of &#8220;the year of ...&#8221; is not only passé but also irrelevant. The disruptive forces of mobile arrived more than two years ago and will fundamentally change businesses in the decades to come. 
</p><p>You could argue that 2011 was the year of Android, given that the number of Android devices activated daily doubled from 350,000 to 700,000 between April and December 2011. Or perhaps it was the year of the mobile operating system war, with Nokia’s strategic shift to Microsoft (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=MSFT" class="ticker" title="MSFT">NSDQ: MSFT</a>) Windows Phone OS. So what are the trends that will shape the mobile landscape in 2012? Let’s look at them in four categories: business, ecosystem, consumer expectations, and technology.</p>

<p><strong>Mobile Is A Key Business Enabler</strong></p>

<p>Professionals who hope to increase the sophistication of their mobile strategies will need to:</p>

<p><small><b>&#187;</b></small>&nbsp; Develop a scalable approach to delivering mobile services. Organizations will need a strategic approach to building and spreading institutional knowledge as well as governance for the development of mobile services. It will be increasingly important to define key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure the success of mobile initiatives.</p>

<p><small><b>&#187;</b></small>&nbsp; Craft a mobile strategy that extends beyond phones. The emergence of tablets in particular will require a different approach than smartphones.</p>

<p><small><b>&#187;</b></small>&nbsp; Differentiate on the delivery rather than the content of mobile services. In 2012, &#8220;how&#8221; mobile services are delivered will differentiate them&#8212;not what they offer.<br />
&nbsp; <br />
<strong>Success In The Mobile Ecosystems Will Elude Incumbents And Embrace Newcomers</strong></p>

<p>Expect incumbents across a range of industries to look to hold or gain share as mobile revolutionizes their business. Key 2012 mobile ecosystem trends include:</p>

<p><small><b>&#187;</b></small>&nbsp; The emergence of mobile digital wallets and their ability to go beyond payment. New technologies are converting mobile handsets into digital wallets that combine not just payments but also receipts, vouchers, and loyalty schemes. As well as gaining the convenience of using the phone for payment, consumers will benefit from post-transaction elements such as location-based coupons and enhanced product information at the point of sale.<br />
 <br />
<small><b>&#187;</b></small>&nbsp; The continuation of the smartphone OS bloodbath. If you need a native application, iOS and Android are &#8220;must-haves.&#8221; However, there is still room for a third major OS platform. Windows Phone is a good candidate, but Nokia (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=NOK" class="ticker" title="NOK">NYSE: NOK</a>) and Microsoft will have to execute perfectly to stay in the game longer term, even with a larger portfolio of devices in 2012.<br />
 <br />
<small><b>&#187;</b></small>&nbsp; Amazon (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=AMZN" class="ticker" title="AMZN">NSDQ: AMZN</a>) and Facebook becoming disruptive distribution forces. We don’t expect Amazon to succeed in replicating its Kindle approach in the crowded smartphone space&#8212;nor do we expect Facebook to invest in hardware. While their respective roles in the mobile space are still unclear, they could become disruptive forces that enable the distribution of products and services in new ways. Think about the use of social recommendations and personalization tools to facilitate the discovery of mobile services.<br />
&nbsp; <br />
<strong>Consumer Expectations Will Be Both High And Conflicted</strong></p>

<p>Professionals developing mobile services should take the following into account:</p>

<p><small><b>&#187;</b></small>&nbsp; Consumers will expect more contextual experiences. Phones will have the ability to collect a phenomenal amount of information about a consumer. They will offer new product and service opportunities, both on their own and when combined with others. Mobile phones will be the hub of consumer interaction&#8212;not only with other people but also with other services and machines, such as TVs, cars, and even medical devices like heart monitors. Physical products will increasingly ship with companion mobile services.<br />
 <br />
<small><b>&#187;</b></small>&nbsp; But they will also worry about privacy and security. When the press realized that several players were tracking user location to improve services, there was a public outcry. Location is the least of it. The mobile phone will know everything about an individual. Consumer concerns here will center on: 1) the commercial use of this information, and 2) security issues, given the increased use of mobile devices for banking and buying.</p>

<p><strong>Emerging Technologies Need Standards And Scale To Succeed</strong></p>

<p>New native technologies will enable new services, products, and navigation techniques that are unimaginable on the PC. Professionals excited by these new technologies should note that:</p>

<p><small><b>&#187;</b></small>&nbsp; HTML5 has made phenomenal progress, but it is not a panacea. Adobe’s abandonment of Flash at the end of last year and support for HTML5 from heavyweights like Apple, Google (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=GOOG" class="ticker" title="GOOG">NSDQ: GOOG</a>), Amazon, and Microsoft are elevating HTML5’s potential as a solution. Two key things continue to hold back this potential cure-all: 1) the experience and performance differences between native and web applications are noticeable, and 2) realizing the full benefits of HTML5 requires device- and OS-specific optimization.</p>

<p><small><b>&#187;</b></small>&nbsp; Near Field Communications (NFC) will fail to live up to the hype. We expect dozens of millions of NFC devices to ship from a wide variety of device makers — including, eventually, Apple (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=AAPL" class="ticker" title="AAPL">NSDQ: AAPL</a>). We expect events like the 2012 Olympic Games in London to serve as marketing catalysts and help showcase the numerous potential uses of the technology. However, a poor out-of-the-box experience, minimal consumer education, and the lack of NFC infrastructure will inhibit growth.<br />
 <br />
<small><b>&#187;</b></small>&nbsp; The cloud is still too congested or too thin. The consumerization of the enterprise IT notion of cloud computing is already a reality, with services such as Dropbox, Spotify, and Apple’s iCloud. The cloud will grow in importance, enabling cross-device services, but will be inhibited by limited network capacity and congestion.</p>

					<p>Today brings news of yet another round of capital-intensive cost-cutting for the challenged mobile phone maker Nokia: the company today announced that it would be transferring smartphone assembly from factories in Hungary, Finland and Mexico, and putting the operation in Asia.
</p><p>The plants will remain operational now for &#8220;smartphone product customization.&#8221; The news comes amidst unconfirmed reports that the company is planning to curtail its Symbian lineup after the release of the next model.</p>

<p>Nokia (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=NOK" class="ticker" title="NOK">NYSE: NOK</a>) says that the transfer will result in the loss of 4,000 jobs in total, and the reductions will take place through the end of 2012.</p>

<p>Nokia does not outline how much the move to Asia will mean in terms of money saved, but this is a decision that has been some time in the making: these were plants that were spared in the last round of cuts under CEO Stephen Elop. </p>

<p>Since then, Nokia has <a href="http://paidcontent.org/article/419-nokia-q4-earnings-scrambling-for-grip-still-falling-1m-lumia-phones-sol/" title="reported yet more declines in its smartphone shipments">reported yet more declines in its smartphone shipments</a>, mainly around its legacy Symbian platform. The company is now gradually moving to making more of its smartphone portfolio based on Microsoft&#8217;s Windows Phone platform.</p>

<p>Now, Nokia says that the move is being made to put the manufacturing bases closer to where the different components are being made for those smartphones. That is a move we have seen from many other companies&#8212;and was the subject of a <a href="http://paidcontent.org/article/419-your-iphone-has-to-be-made-in-china-and-apple-cant-absolve-your-guilt/" title="series of stories">series of stories</a> recently concerning Apple (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=AAPL" class="ticker" title="AAPL">NSDQ: AAPL</a>) in China and the role of Foxconn in that business.</p>

<p>The move to make these plants focused on customization, meanwhile, points to some focus that Nokia does seem to maintain on its software and services for its devices&#8212;a crucial part of the company&#8217;s differentiation as it moves more and more to a platform being used by its competitors as well. Others that make Windows Phone devices include Samsung and HTC.</p>

<p>The news comes amidst <a href="http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/02/03/nokia_symbian/" title="other reports">other reports</a> about Nokia that claim the company is planning to curtail its Symbian lineup after the next model comes out. </p>

<p>Symbian is gradually being phased out for Microsoft&#8217;s Windows Phone platform, but Nokia had originally said it would support the OS until 2016, and that could still be the case even if it stopped making devices based on it. Nokia <a href="http://paidcontent.org/article/419-symbian-now-officially-no-longer-under-the-wing-of-nokia-2300-jobs-go/" title="transferred the operation of Symbian">transferred the operation of Symbian</a> to Accenture last year.</p>

<p>A spokesperson from Nokia told paidContent that the article was &#8220;speculative at best&#8221; and would not comment on device rumor or speculation: </p>

<p>&#8220;As we have previously said Symbian continues to be an important part of our portfolio and going forward it will play a more focused role as we accelerate our transition to Windows Phone,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We remain fully committed to the platform through 2016, which means on-going software support as we go forward.&#8221; </p>

<p>The company is currently rolling out an update to Symbian, Belle, and the devices remain popular in the Middle East, Russia and India, even as they have lost out to Android-based devices, Apple&#8217;s iPhone and even RIM (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=RIMM" class="ticker" title="RIMM">NSDQ: RIMM</a>) in other markets.

</p><p>The staff attorney for the International Trade Commission plans to recommend to the judge overseeing the case that Barnes &amp; Noble did not infringe Microsoft&#8217;s mobile patents with the Nook, according to <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-02-06/barnes-noble-backed-by-u-s-agency-staff-in-microsoft-case-1-.html" title="a report by Bloomberg">a report by Bloomberg</a>. This is an extremely preliminary development: the judge overseeing the case can decide whatever he likes when he issues his ruling in April, and that decision can be further appealed to a panel of ITC judges.</p>

<p>But the ITC, while a speedier venue for patent rulings than the court system, has not really rewarded patent holders seeking infringement rulings. Apple (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=AAPL" class="ticker" title="AAPL">NSDQ: AAPL</a>) was able to get a final ruling against HTC, but for a minor piece of its smartphones that HTC has already said it can work around. Microsoft was able to get a preliminary ruling against Motorola (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=MMI" class="ticker" title="MMI">NYSE: MMI</a>), but on only one of the seven patents it wanted to assert against Motorola.</p>

In reality, it seems that it still lagging behind: according to some figures out today from <a href="http://www.statcounter.com" title="StatCounter">StatCounter</a>, only 8.5 percent of internet visits came from mobile devices in 2011.
</p><p>StatCounter&#8217;s figure, which does not include tablet usage, is still nearly double the mobile figure from 2010, when mobile devices accounted for 4.3 percent of internet usage. In 2009, mobiles accounted for only 1.6 percent of visits. It also comes as internet access via desktop PCs appears to be on the wane:</p>

<p>Yet even given the growth in mobile, these still-low figures also go some way to explaining why certain businesses, like mobile advertising, are still not the money spinners you would expect them to be: the usage volumes are just simply not there yet.</p>

<p>StatCounter also provided some numbers on which handset makers are bringing in the most internet usage country-by-country. Nokia (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=NOK" class="ticker" title="NOK">NYSE: NOK</a>)&#8212;which, despite its many declines over several quarters, has managed to remain the world&#8217;s biggest smartphone maker&#8212;is the global leader in terms of internet access via mobile devices. That is partly because it is strong in those countries where users may be opting for phones instead of PCs to go online, such as China and India.</p>

<p>It will be interesting to see whether Nokia can hold on to that lead, both in internet usage and in smartphone leadership given its switch to Windows Phone for its smartphones&#8212;especially if you believe reports that Nokia is <a href="http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/02/03/nokia_symbian/" title="planning to discontinue Symbian after the development of one more device">planning to discontinue Symbian after the development of one more device</a>. Symbian is currently the company&#8217;s best-selling platform and although it has now been outsourced to Accenture, Nokia has said it would remain committed to it until 2016.</p>

<p>Apple (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=AAPL" class="ticker" title="AAPL">NSDQ: AAPL</a>), which <a href="http://paidcontent.org/article/419-npd-apple-takes-top-three-slots-for-smartphone-best-sellers-in-u.s/" title="NPD">NPD</a> earlier today noted is the most popular vendor in terms of smartphone sales in the U.S., is also leading in mobile internet usage in the U.S., as well as the UK, markets where it has also performed very strongly in terms of sales. Worldwide, RIM (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=RIMM" class="ticker" title="RIMM">NSDQ: RIMM</a>) appears to be taking a nosedive at the moment. 					<p>Microsoft&#8217;s plan for Windows Phone 8&#8212;which appears to be moving in step with its overall Windows 8 launch strategy&#8212;has been leaked, and the company is planning to take some big steps forward in terms of overall performance, mobile payments, and voice calling.
</p><p><a href="http://pocketnow.com/windows-phone/exclusive-windows-phone-8-detailed" title="PocketNow">PocketNow</a> got its hands on a video featuring <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/exec/joeb/" title="Microsoft's Joe Belfiore">Microsoft&#8217;s Joe Belfiore</a>, corporate vice president and director for Windows Phone program management, which was apparently intended only for its good friends at Nokia (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=NOK" class="ticker" title="NOK">NYSE: NOK</a>). (Whoops.) The video was not posted, but PocketNow summarized some of the major improvements planned for Windows Phone 8, and here&#8217;s a sampling:</p>

<p><small><b>&#187;</b></small>&nbsp; <strong>Core experience</strong>: Windows Phone 8 will support multicore processors, something that its major competitors have already embraced. Nokia&#8217;s Lumia 910 was well-received at CES last month but one major knock is its reliance on less-powerful processors than Apple (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=AAPL" class="ticker" title="AAPL">NSDQ: AAPL</a>) or Android partners can use in their phones. </p>

<p><small><b>&#187;</b></small>&nbsp; <strong>Mobile payments</strong>: Microsoft (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=MSFT" class="ticker" title="MSFT">NSDQ: MSFT</a>) will become the latest major mobile player to embrace NFC technology as a mobile-payments solution for Windows Phone 8 makers. PocketNow said Belfiore emphasized that Microsoft would let carriers brand the payments system themselves (something that Google (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=GOOG" class="ticker" title="GOOG">NSDQ: GOOG</a>) has resisted) and that Microsoft&#8217;s mobile-payments system would also work on PCs. Nokia hinted this feature was coming earlier in the week.</p>

<p><small><b>&#187;</b></small>&nbsp; <strong>Skype me</strong>: According to the report, Microsoft will do what many had expected following its purchase of Skype and incorporate that VoIP (voice over Internet Protocol) application into Windows Phone 8. It will be very interesting to see how carriers react to that feature: it could increase the amount of mobile data used by the phone, but at the expense of regular voice calls. Updated: <a href="http://www.winsupersite.com/article/windows8/windows-phone-8-preview-142154" title="Paul Thurott at Supersite for Windows">Paul Thurott at Supersite for Windows</a> appears to have been briefed in more detail on Windows Phone 8, and said that while Skype will remain a separate app, it will have been improved.</p>

<p><small><b>&#187;</b></small>&nbsp; <strong>No reinvention needed</strong>: Developers should be able to write apps for both Windows 8 PCs and Windows Phone 8 devices with a minimum of extra work, Belfiore reportedly said in the video.</p>

<p>Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 aren&#8217;t expected until the second half of 2012, so a lot could change between now and then. But it&#8217;s clear that Microsoft is moving to address some of the competitive concerns against iOS and Android.</p>

					<p>Apple (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=AAPL" class="ticker" title="AAPL">NSDQ: AAPL</a>) has accused Samsung of &#8220;<a href="http://moconews.net/article/419-the-patent-plot-thickens-apple-sues-samsung-itc-recommends-for-nokia-ht/" title="slavishly copying">slavishly copying</a>&#8221; its hardware designs; but whether or not that is true, one area where Samsung <em>is</em> taking a note from Apple is in how it debuts its big products. The company today announced that it would not be launching its next big smartphone, the Galaxy S III, at this month&#8217;s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, as originally expected. 
</p><p>Instead, Samsung will be presenting it at its own-branded event, with less of a gap between the product launch and actual roll-out.</p>

<p>&#8220;Samsung is looking forward to introducing and demonstrating exciting new mobile products at Mobile World Congress 2012. The successor to the Galaxy S II smartphone will be unveiled at a separate Samsung-hosted event in the first half of the year, closer to commercial availability of the product. Samsung stays committed to providing the best possible mobile experiences for customers around the world,&#8221; a spokesperson told paidContent, via email today. </p>

<p>The Android-based S II (pictured here with its best enemy, the iPhone 4S) has been one of Samsung&#8217;s best sellers since launching last year&#8212;although Samsung <a href="http://paidcontent.org/article/419-samsung-smartphones-up-30-percent-but-you-have-to-guess-how-many-we-sol/" title="hasn't given exact sales figures">hasn&#8217;t given exact sales figures</a>&#8212;and many have been anticipating the upgrade, which will apparently feature a faster processor, better camera and other enhancements. </p>

<p>One of the big issues with the S II, however, was that while Samsung unveiled the device at the 2011 MWC event, it didn&#8217;t launch in Europe until summer, and the U.S. several months later, in <a href="http://paidcontent.org/article/419-samsung-galaxy-s-ii-hits-u.s.-will-cost-199-at-sprint/" title="September">September</a>. </p>

<p>Did that possibly steal some thunder from the launch? As smartphone competition hots up&#8212;including leaks of the first BlackBerry 10 &#8220;London&#8221; devices and even a new iPhone coming this year&#8212;that&#8217;s a variable that Samsung probably doesn&#8217;t want to explore again.</p>

<p>But while Microsoft (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=MSFT" class="ticker" title="MSFT">NSDQ: MSFT</a>) has pulled out of CES, and Apple has been running its own launch events for years, Samsung doesn&#8217;t seem to be bowing out of the trade show peep show altogether. There have been rumors of Samsung unveiling its first Tizen handsets&#8212;that is, the new linux OS that it is developing with Intel (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=INTC" class="ticker" title="INTC">NSDQ: INTC</a>) from the ashes of MeeGo&#8212;which could point to a new direction altogether for the Korean handset maker. There are also reports of further tablets on the cards.

</p><p>The ad purchase is a pivot in Google&#8217;s recent &#8220;<a href="http://www.webpronews.com/google-advertises-offline-2012-01" title="Good to Know">Good to Know</a>&#8221; marketing campaign for which it is <a href="http://www.usatoday.com/tech/news/story/2012-01-17/google-privacy-ad-campaign/52613110/1" title="reportedly">reportedly</a> spending tens of millions on newspaper and billboard ads. The campaign is increasingly important at a time when critics are piling on with claims that Google&#8217;s new policy is sinister and intrusvie.</p>

<p>The ad on WashingtonPost.com, shown below, does not adopt the cutesy touches of Google&#8217;s offline ads and simply says, &#8220;We&#8217;re changing our Privacy Policy. Not your privacy controls.&#8221; </p>

<p>Google&#8217;s task is difficult because its explanation is a complicated one. The reason for the changes are rooted in Google acquisitions of companies like YouTube that have legacy privacy policies of their own&#8212;meaning that Google needed a new set of permissions to combine information across its suite of products.</p>

<p>The move is in many ways a housekeeping measure and will not, as some have claimed, require people to sign-in when they use search or YouTube. Google is also being transparent about what it is doing and, unlike most companies, it allows users to <a href="http://www.dataliberation.org/" title="take their data with them">take their data with them</a> if they choose to stop using its services.</p>

<p>But the new privacy policy will also result in Google obtaining more data. And this has not only stoked <a href="http://paidcontent.org/article/419-sign-of-the-times-google-graffiti-pops-up-in-nyc/" title="paranoia">paranoia</a> about the company but also allowed opponents to pounce. Microsoft (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=MSFT" class="ticker" title="MSFT">NSDQ: MSFT</a>), which has long <a href="http://paidcontent.org/article/419-is-patent-expertblogger-florian-mueller-getting-too-cozy-with-microsoft/" title="paid proxies">paid proxies</a> to smear Google, is this week taking out newspaper ads to <a href="http://marketingland.com/microsoft-slams-google-privacy-search-changes-with-putting-people-first-ad-campaign-4887" title="hype the hysteria">hype the hysteria</a>.</p>

<p>On top of everything else, Congress and EU regulators are also circling the company. Google is clearly in the midst of its biggest ever public relations challenge and only time will tell if it can emerge with its once-golden reputation in tact.</p>

<p>New versions of the Lumia design, introduced to showcase Windows Phone in November, will also remove the flip-up plastic tab that presently covers the micro-USB charger for the phone – one of just two moving parts on the Lumia 800 phone.</p>

<p>&#8220;If you can take away a moving part and make it [the phone] more beautiful in the placement of the components, we&#8217;ll do it, so that&#8217;s something where we can certainly keep improving,&#8221; Ahtisaari told the Guardian. &#8220;Take it to the extreme, and why are there any connectors?&#8221;</p>

<p>Ahtisaari is extremely influential within Nokia (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=NOK" class="ticker" title="NOK">NYSE: NOK</a>), having been <a href="http://press.nokia.com/2012/01/26/nokia-appoints-marko-ahtisaari-to-nokia-leadership-team/">appointed last week to its leadership team</a>, reporting directly to chief executive Stephen Elop.The removal of the USB connector would imply the use of wireless charging – a system that has already been demonstrated by products such as HP&#8217;s TouchPad, which had a wireless charging system. A Nokia spokesman said the company declined to comment on future product features.</p>

<p>Speaking in Nokia&#8217;s headquarters in Espoo, Finland, earlier this month, Ahtisaari said that new elements will &#8220;ship with the product that we will ship in the future&#8221;. Nokia already has &#8220;open NFC&#8221; incorporated into a number of its smartphones to enable rapid, password-free setup of Bluetooth pairing between phones and accessories such as speakers and headsets.</p>

<p>Although current versions of Windows Phone do not include NFC elements, Microsoft has indicated that it could be included in versions shipping by October 2012. And Elop also said at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas that although the current Windows Phone Lumia models – the 800 and 900 – do not have NFC, &#8220;it is growing in importance, and I personally believe in it&#8221;.</p>

<p>NFC &#8220;open&#8221; allows Bluetooth pairing without the use of password by tapping the devices to be paired together: an exchange of electronic tokens takes place, so that Bluetooth connection – for a hi-fi, speakers or headset – can occur within seconds with virtually no other interaction. Current secure Bluetooth pairing otherwise requires the user to enter a password of up to eight digits. </p>

<p>Nokia has shipped more than a million Lumia phones since introducing them in November. The company decided to abandon its Symbian platform for high-end smartphones in January 2011 after Elop decided it could not compete against Apple&#8217;s iOS and Google&#8217;s Android mobile operating systems.</p>

<p>He also suggested that touchscreen interaction is in its very early days, comparing it to the early days of the automobile: &#8220;In the 1880s in the car industry cars had tillers – it took 15 years to agree on the steering wheel controlling the front wheels. We&#8217;re in the middle of that part of the evolution of interaction.&#8221;</p>

</p><p>In a <a title="" href="http://www.scribd.com/fullscreen/79470034?access_key=key-1eryuhu9764a57da26y5">confidential document</a> obtained under the Freedom of Information Act, lobbying groups for the major rights holders claimed Google and <a title="More from guardian.co.uk on Microsoft" href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/microsoft">Microsoft</a>&#8216;s <a title="More from guardian.co.uk on Bing" href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/bing">Bing</a> are making it &#8220;much more difficult&#8221; for people to find legal music and films online.</p>

<p>The private document, obtained by the free speech campaigners <a title="" href="http://www.openrightsgroup.org/">Open Rights Group</a> and shared with the Guardian, urges the government to introduce a voluntary body that would remove rogue websites from <a title="More from guardian.co.uk on Internet" href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/internet">internet</a> search results.</p>

<p>The proposals were made to the culture minister Ed Vaizey as part of a series of consultations on internet piracy between rights holders, search giants and the government in November last year. The nine-page document was submitted on behalf of the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), the UK body for the music majors, the Motion Picture Association (MPA), the Premier League, the Publishers Association and the Pact, the film and TV independent producers&#8217; trade body.</p>

<p>Privately, rights holders said there is a &#8220;spirit of optimism&#8221; between the entertainment groups and search engines as they attempt to usher in more legal media sites, including <a title="" href="https://music.google.com/music/unsupportedcountry">Google&#8217;s own fledgling music service</a>.</p>

<p>Google has in the past year stepped up efforts to remove copyright-infringing content, launching <a title="" href="http://googlepublicpolicy.blogspot.com/2011/09/making-copyright-work-better-online.html">a fast-track removal requests form</a> and filtering terms &#8220;associated with infringement&#8221;. However, the rights holders claim in the document that &#8220;as time goes on, the situation is getting worse rather than better&#8221;.</p>

<p>&#8220;Consumers rely on search engines to find and access entertainment content and they play a vital role in the UK digital economy,&#8221; the rights holders state.</p>

<p>&#8220;At present, consumer searching for digital copies of copyright entertainment content are directed overwhelmingly to illegal sites and services.&#8220;The entertainment groups want Google to &#8220;continuously review key search words&#8221; and &#8220;effectively screen&#8221; mobile apps on Android smartphones in an effort to combat illicit sharing.</p>

<p>The document claims that 16 of the first 20 Google search results for chart singles link to &#8220;known legal sites&#8221;, according to  searches by the BPI in September. In an attempt to persuade the government to clamp down on search engines, the groups claim that 41 percent of Google&#8217;s first-page results for bestselling books in April last year were &#8220;non-legal links&#8221; to websites.</p>

<p>&#8220;Much of the illegal activity in the digital economy is facilitated and encouraged by money-making rogue sites,&#8221; the document claimed.</p>

<p>&#8220;Intermediaries, unwittingly or by wilfully turning a blind eye (or in some cases, by encouraging such activity), play a key role in enabling content theft and often even profit from it. Only a comprehensive approach can address this issue.&#8221;</p>

<p>The entertainment bodies call for search engines to:</p>

<p>&#8212;Assign lower rankings to sites that &#8220;repeatedly&#8221; make available copyright-infringing material</p>

<p>&#8212;Prioritise sites that &#8220;obtain certification as a licensed site&#8221; for music and film downloading</p>

<p>&#8212;Stop indexing sites that are subject to court orders&#8212;Stop indexing &#8220;substantially infringing websites&#8221;</p>

<p>&#8212;Improve &#8220;notice and takedown&#8221; system</p>

<p>&#8212;Ensure that users are not directed to illicit <a title="More from guardian.co.uk on Filesharing" href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/file-sharing">filesharing</a> sites through suggested search</p>

<p>&#8212;Ensure search engines do not advertise around unlawful sites or sell keywords associated with piracy or sell mobile apps &#8220;which facilitate infringement&#8221;</p>

<p>The chief executive of BPI, Geoff Taylor,&nbsp; said on Thursday: &#8220;The vast majority of consumers want search engines to direct them to legal sources of entertainment rather than the online black market.</p>

<p>&#8220;As search engines roll out high-quality content services, like Google Music, we want to build a constructive partnership that supports a legal online economy. We hope that Google and other search engines will respond positively.&#8221;</p>

<p>A spokeswoman for the Motion Picture Association added: &#8220;If you look for film or music via a search engine you usually find websites providing access to pirated films or music at the top of the list of results.</p>

<p>&#8220;This is confusing for consumers, damages the legal market and legitimises copyright theft. We are in dialogue with search engines, ISPs [internet service providers], advertising networks and payment processors about a code to deal with the escalating problem of online copyright theft which threatens the growth of the entire creative industries sector. This paper is a result of that dialogue and we appreciate government&#8217;s continuing efforts to help bring about a more responsible internet&#8221;.</p>

<p>Google declined to comment.</p>

<p>Peter Bradwell, campaigner for the Open Rights Group, said the proposal contained &#8220;some dangerous ideas&#8221;. He said: &#8220;It&#8217;s another plan to take on far too much power over what we&#8217;re allowed to look at and do online.&#8221;

A report out today from Strategy Analytics said that for Q4 it was Apple (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=AAPL" class="ticker" title="AAPL">NSDQ: AAPL</a>), the company that effectively created the market for tablets two years ago with the iPad&#8212;although its lead is continuing to narrow amongst an ever-increasingly crowded field of Android tablet makers.
</p><p>Apple, it said, remains the single-biggest company in tablets. Almost mirroring 15 million in iPad sales that Apple said it achieved for the quarter, SA says the iPad accounted for 15.4 million all shipments (not sales) in the quarter, compared to 10.5 million shipments of all Android-based tablets. </p>

<p>In terms of market share, that worked out to 57.6 percent for the iPad versus 39.1 percent for all Android tablets. Overall the market saw overall tablet shipments of 27 million units for the quarter, representing growth of 150 percent over the year before. For all of 2011, there were 66.9 million shipments, 260 percent higher than 2010.</p>

<p>The new report (link <a href="http://tinyurl.com/78qpf5u" title="here">here</a>) made very little of Microsoft&#8217;s tablet effort to date. It only has one percent of the market, and accounted for 400,000 shipments. Just as it had to do with smartphones, Microsoft (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=MSFT" class="ticker" title="MSFT">NSDQ: MSFT</a>) will effectively be starting from scratch when it launches its next-generation OS, Windows 8, later this year. Rather damningly, the PlayBook from RIM (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=RIMM" class="ticker" title="RIMM">NSDQ: RIMM</a>) doesn&#8217;t make it into the individual rankings, and instead gets lumped into &#8220;other&#8221; category with possibly a few straggling sales from the now-discontinued TouchPad from HP (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=HPQ" class="ticker" title="HPQ">NYSE: HPQ</a>) running on WebOS.</p>

<p>Frustratingly, Strategy Analytics does not break out any estimates for how individual Android makers have done, although it does note that Amazon (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=AMZN" class="ticker" title="AMZN">NSDQ: AMZN</a>), Samsung, and Asus (in that order) are driving volumes among the &#8220;dozens&#8221; of models on the market at the moment. </p>

<p>However, this does raise another issue: Given the ongoing fragmentation in the market&#8212;Amazon&#8217;s &#8220;forked&#8221; version of Android for the seven-inch Kindle Fire, for example, being very different from that of the Honeycomb-version of Android used in the Galaxy 10.1&#8212;and the fact that this fragmentation does not represent much cohesion in terms of services, how useful it is to count all Android tablet shipments in one category, and, more generally, how accurate are those shipment figures when it comes to actual sales?

</p><p>Nokia currently has two models Windows Phone devices in the market, the Lumia 800 and Lumia 710, both 3G models, and is planning to launch a new 4G version in the U.S. in March of this year.</p>

<p>The day before Nokia&#8217;s results, a <a href="http://paidcontent.org/article/419-nokia-clears-the-decks-of-its-burning-platform-ahead-of-results-tomorro/" title="trio of news items">trio of news items</a> released by the company&#8212;combined with the &#8220;leak&#8221; that it would be offering its first 4G phone, the Lumia 900, at a <a href="http://paidcontent.org/article/419-at-99-nokia-and-att-hoping-to-spark-interest-in-lumia-900/" title="massive discount">massive discount</a> to the rest of the 4G offerings out there&#8212;looked a little like padding for worse news to come today, and that&#8217;s more or less what we got:</p>

<p><strong>Handset unit sales</strong> were down eight percent to 113.5 million.</p>

<p>Feature phones actually held up in their unit sales: 93.9 million for the quarter, down by only one percent.</p>

<p>Smartphones, however, did significantly worse: 19.6 million devices, down 31 percent.</p>

<p><strong>Device revenues</strong> overall were €6 billion, down 29 percent. Again, the biggest weakness was in smartphones, which had sales of €2.74 billion, down 38 percent.</p>

<p>Not surprisingly, Nokia is very much trying to draw a line under last year, one of profound transformation for the company, and look ahead to what 2012 will hold. </p>

<p>It&#8217;s taking a very aggressive strategy to pick up much-needed market share for its devices in key markets like the U.S. and UK, offering its handsets at massive discounts&#8212;and in the case of the UK, even free under certain contracts. That tactic will come at a big price though: unless Nokia has worked out a way to make high-end devices for less money than its competitors, it will continue to see erosion of its margins and device average selling price. In other words, it might win business, but at what cost?</p>

<p>In the quarter just ended, those margins continued their decline. In this quarter Nokia reported gross margins of 23.7 percent on smart devices, compared to 30.8 percent for the same quarter a year ago. ASP for smartphones was down by only three percent to €140&#8212;a figure that was helped by sales of more expensive models such as the N9 and the Lumia 800, according to Nokia. Feature phones saw a decline of 10 percent in ASP to €35, their lowest price yet.</p>

<p><strong>Windows Phone sales</strong>. Nokia reached a milestone&#8212;or a &#8220;beachhead&#8221; as it calls it&#8212;by selling more than 1 million Lumia handsets. But this number is still a far, far cry from the 20.8 million smart devices that Nokia sold in <a href="http://i.nokia.com/blob/view/-/264272/data/1/-/Request-Nokia-results2009Q4e-pdf.pdf" title="Q4 of 2009">Q4 of 2009</a>, let alone the 37 million iPhones sold by Apple (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=AAPL" class="ticker" title="AAPL">NSDQ: AAPL</a>) sold in Q4 2011. </p>

<p>The Windows Phone platform, according to figures from <a href="http://paidcontent.org/article/419-apple-back-on-top-as-bestselling-smartphone-in-the-u.s/" title="Kantar">Kantar</a> out this week, accounted for less than two percent of sales in any of the nine countries it surveys as a barometer of smartphone demand. That points to a very long road ahead for both companies to bring those numbers into a more credibly competing realm.</p>

<p>Nokia says that it will introduce its first WP7 devices into China and Latin America in the first half of 2012. This is important for a number of reasons: Greater China is currently Nokia&#8217;s second-largest market after Europe (€5 billion in device sales for China compared to €7 billion for Europe), but it is declining, seeing an 18 percent drop in revenues over last year and 20 percent in volumes. Meanwhile, LatAm is Nokia&#8217;s second-smallest market after North America but it&#8217;s one of the only ones that is growing (Middle East being the other growth region.) In LatAm, Nokia had sales of €2.5 billion on volumes of 46 million units. </p>

<p>LatAm and China are also both markets where Microsoft (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=MSFT" class="ticker" title="MSFT">NSDQ: MSFT</a>) has yet to introduce Windows Phone, and where there is still a lot of room for smartphone growth&#8212;something that Apple, RIM (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=RIMM" class="ticker" title="RIMM">NSDQ: RIMM</a>) and Android makers have not overlooked, either. Still, that means a population of consumers with less preconceptions about Android and iOS being &#8220;the&#8221; smartphone platforms of the future&#8212;getting through to those consumers is crucial if Microsoft truly hopes to makes its OS a truly global smartphone player.</p>

<p><strong>Design front and center</strong>. In one more move to shore up confidence for the year ahead, Nokia today, separately, also announced that Marko Ahtisaari has been promoted to the position of EVP of design, and has also joined the company&#8217;s leadership team. Ahtisaari is a Nokia veteran who left the company and then returned after it acquired his social networking startup Dopplr. The emphasis on design is a significant one, considering that this is where Nokia will have to differentiate and excel in the years ahead as it makes phones on a platform&#8212;Windows Phone&#8212;that is also being used by its competitors.
</p><p>During the earnings analyst call, Nokia executives gave a bit more color to the results:</p>

<p>CEO Stephen Elop acknowledged some of the big issues facing declining sales for the Symbian platform but still said the company would continue to remain committed to supporting the OS through 2016. Nokia earlier this year struck an outsourcing deal with Accenture to take over the management of the platform as part of its gradual winding down of operations. In the last year, Nokia has rolled out several new devices based on Symbian, and has a roadmap for updates to the software for the year ahead.</p>

<p>Nokia also highlighted the platform support payments and licensing fees that Microsoft and Nokia are paying each other. It was described by the company&#8217;s CFO Timo Ihamuotila as a &#8220;competitive&#8221; structure that will run in the billions of dollars between the two companies&#8212;although no indication of which party benefits more financially from those. This last quarter, Nokia recorded a payment of $250 million from Microsoft as a result of this arrangement and did not specify whether it paid out money to Microsoft as well. Consider that without that quarter-billion dollar payment those bottom-line results would have been even more gloomy.</p>

<p>The company will be offering a dividend of 20 euro cents per share and has no plans for stock repurchases in the year ahead.</p>

<p>Elop also highlighted something we have heard many times already&#8212;from carriers and Nokia itself: &#8220;The third ecosystem&#8221; argument is &#8220;very strong&#8221; with carriers. One wonders what that might mean between the lines. More big discounts, subsidized by operators, in the pipeline? More large orders ahead? Preferential treatment for Nokia over other platforms and handset makers?

					<p>Nokia&#8217;s determination to carve out a niche in the U.S. smartphone market looks like it will start with an awfully enticing offer. According to reports, Nokia (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=NOK" class="ticker" title="NOK">NYSE: NOK</a>) and AT&amp;T (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=T" class="ticker" title="T">NYSE: T</a>) will offer the Lumia 900 for $99, a rung below what other carriers and handset makers are charging for 4G phones with two-year contracts.
</p><p><a href="http://www.bgr.com/2012/01/25/atts-q1-2012-roadmap-nokia-lumia-900-to-launch-march-18th-for-99-99/" title="BGR">BGR</a> first reported the pricing strategy, which was also confirmed by <a href="http://news.cnet.com/8301-30686_3-57365988-266/at-t-to-offer-nokia-lumia-900-for-$100-on-march-18/?tag=mncol;topStories" title="CNET">CNET</a>. AT&amp;T is eyeing a March 18th launch date for the Windows Phone Lumia 900, which joins the Lumia 710 on T-Mobile&#8217;s network as engine of Nokia&#8217;s comeback hopes for the U.S. market, where it has historically struggled.</p>

<p><a href="http://www.att.com/shop/wireless/devices/lte-smartphones.jsp?fbid=ZdhgslcTPyo" title="AT&amp;T offers">AT&amp;T offers</a> three LTE Android phones at the moment: the HTC Vivid, the Samsung Galaxy S II, and the LG (SEO: 066570) Nitro, all of which cost $199 with a two-year contract (although the HTC Vivid is currently available for $99 online). <a href="http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/store/controller?item=phoneFirst&amp;action=viewPhoneOverviewByDevice&amp;deviceCategoryId=1" title="Verizon's LTE phones">Verizon&#8217;s LTE phones</a>, which include the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and the Motorola (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=MMI" class="ticker" title="MMI">NYSE: MMI</a>) Razr, are priced anywhere from $299 for the Galaxy Nexus to free for the HTC Thunderbolt.</p>

<p>So the Lumia 900 may not be the cheapest LTE phone on the market when it arrives in March but it will definitely fall into a competitive pricing band that includes Android phones that are starting to get a little old by the hyper-quick standards of this market. Microsoft (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=MSFT" class="ticker" title="MSFT">NSDQ: MSFT</a>) also seems determined to help its partner revive Microsoft&#8217;s mobile division, which is believed to make more money from Android licensing deals than it does from software.</p>

					<p><strong>Update</strong>: Mobile operator O2 says that as of 2pm Wednesday, it has fixed the part of its mobile web browsing service that was reporting mobile phone users&#8217; telephone numbers to websites they visited via O2&#8217;s mobile data network. 
</p><p>In a <a href="http://blog.o2.co.uk/home/2012/01/o2-mobile-numbers-and-web-browsing.html" title="blog post">blog post</a>, it said that the phone numbers were revealed between January 10 and January 25, as a result of &#8220;technical changes&#8221; around &#8220;routine maintenance&#8221;. It was unintended. </p>

<p>The company further writes: &#8220;In addition to the usual trusted partners, there has been the potential for disclosure of customers’ mobile phone numbers to further website owners.&#8221; Who are the &#8216;usual trusted partners&#8217;? O2 writes that normally it shares numbers &#8220;only where absolutely required by trusted partners who work with us on age verification, premium content billing, such as for downloads, and O2&#8217;s own services,&#8221; but does not give more details of who exactly goes on that whitelist. It should be noted that this is also in contradiction to O2&#8217;s initial response, which implied that showing the number was a normal part of mobile web browsing, not an accident.</p>

<p>More disclosure about the whitelist, and how O2 shares a user&#8217;s phone number, may be forthcoming: O2 says it is now in conversation with the Information Commissioners&#8217; Office and Ofcom about the matter&#8212;not to mention the many angry customers criticizing O2 on Wednesday and threatening to take their mobile business elsewhere.</p>

<p>O2, one of the largest mobile operators in Europe, says that it is currently investigating accusations that it is sharing its customers&#8217; mobile numbers with websites visited while surfing on the carrier&#8217;s mobile data network. </p>

<p>The allegations come amid growing questions of user privacy both at the regulatory level and among consumers. These have been highlighted over a spread of cases in the last several months covering companies like Facebook, Google (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=GOOG" class="ticker" title="GOOG">NSDQ: GOOG</a>) and Microsoft (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=MSFT" class="ticker" title="MSFT">NSDQ: MSFT</a>)&#8212;as well as device makers and carriers working with companies like CarrierIQ.</p>

<p>And they come on the same day that the European Commission <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/01/25/us-eu-dataprivacy-idUSTRE80O0X220120125?feedType=RSS&amp;feedName=internetNews" title="published">published</a> new rules regarding data privacy, with companies that breach them facing fines of up to two percent of their annual turnover. These laws would only come into effect at the end of 2013.</p>

<p>Lewis Peckover, a web systems administrator in London, <a href="ways to verify a user is on a mobile device/network. Didn't expect it to be quite so easy on @O2" title="said">said</a> he first noticed the issue on Tuesday, when he was looking for &#8220;ways to verify a user is on a mobile device/network&#8221; and discovered that his own mobile number was getting displayed as part of the header information.</p>

<p>To explore the matter further, he set up a <a href="http://lew.io/headers.php" title="simple website">simple website</a>&#8212;which he named &#8220;Bad O2!&#8221;&#8212;that lets users see what information gets passed to that website when they visit it from a particular browser or device. He encouraged users to try this out for themselves.</p>

<p>The result has been that several other people have also found their number appearing on the site&#8212;meaning that there is a likelihood that others going to other websites via O2&#8217;s wireless data network were also having their numbers revealed elsewhere.</p>

<p>From what we have seen so far, it looks like it is only O2 and not other carriers sharing this information: a test with Three and another via T-Mobile did not yield our numbers showing up on the diagnostic page. O2 also runs MNVO services, such as its own GiffGaff, and Tesco Mobile, and their customers are also having their numbers revealed.</p>

<p>Nor does it seem like O2 numbers appear every time: some have pointed out that their O2 numbers are not coming up in their own <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/c_davies/status/162118014421041152" title="header tests">header tests</a>. </p>

<p>However, when it does pick up the number, it appears to be happening on both iPhones as well as Android devices. Here&#8217;s one example that we were sent:</p>

</p><p>Chris Welton, who sent us the image, noted that he turned off his WiFi before testing, so this does not seem to be connected to the <a href="http://paidcontent.org/article/419-o2-building-free-wifi-network-across-the-uk.-whats-the-catch/" title="free WiFi network">free WiFi network</a> that O2 rolled out last year, as part of its push into mobile advertising. </p>

<p>O2 last night told Peckover, via <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/O2/status/161872584634408960" title="Twitter">Twitter</a>, &#8220;The mobile number in the HTML is linked to how the site determines that you&#8217;re browsing from a mobile device.&#8221; </p>

<p>But it&#8217;s not clear, still, why it would be that the numbers are appearing inconsistently, and why O2 is sharing this information when our tests with other mobile operators have not come up with the same results: that implies there are ways around this that O2 is not taking. We have reached out to O2 for a response to these allegations, and, if they prove accurate&#8212;why it is that this information is getting passed along, and for what purpose.</p>

<p>Alexander Hanff, a privacy advocate and consultant for Privacy International, tells paidContent that sharing information like a telephone number to indicate mobile browsing could be a &#8220;very serious breach&#8221; of privacy regulations: </p>

<p>&#8220;It indicates a fundamental lack of understanding of privacy and security within O2 as there are many other ways to illustrate that there is a mobile device accessing a web site (such as the User Agent string),&#8221; he told us via email. &#8220;This is a serious breach with potentially serious consequences with regards to the harvesting of these numbers and phishing (for example if you open an email on your device with images embedded, the second you open that email, your phone number will be sent to the server where those images are being sent from).&#8221;</p>

<p>He also points out that there could be a &#8220;real cost to consumers&#8221;: &#8220;I am currently overseas, if my cell number is harvested and I receive cold calls whilst overseas I have to pay roaming charges for those calls - furthermore, O2 would profit from those calls (if I were an O2 customer) and the numbers could be significant.&#8221;</p>

<p>Perhaps most damagingly he notes: &#8220;This is a clear breach of the Data Protection Act as phone numbers are classed as PII for legitimate reasons, it is also likely that this is a breach of Privacy and Electronic Communications (EC Directive) Regulations and possibly a criminal breach of Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act (RIPA) which since early 2011 has carried penalties for &#8220;unintentional&#8221; interception of communications.&#8221;</p>

<p>Given that O2 in the UK alone has several million customers this could become a very serious issue indeed. <p>The UK&#8217;s Information Commissioner&#8217;s Office (ICO) has told paidContent that a mobile number on its own is not a data breach per se, but when it is coupled with any other identifying information it can constitute a data breach. Also, she pointed out that because O2 is apparently revealing its own customers&#8217; numbers, that raises questions. The ICO also emailed a prepared statement on the situation:</p>

<blockquote><p>“Keeping people’s personal information secure is a fundamental principle that sits at the heart of the Data Protection Act and the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations. When people visit a website via their mobile phone they would not expect their number to be made available to that website. We will now speak to O2 to remind them of their data breach notification obligations, and to better understand what has happened, before we decide how to proceed.”&nbsp; </p></blockquote>

					<p>Considering the <a href="http://paidcontent.org/article/419-still-apples-world-37-million-iphones-15-million-ipads-destroy-estimate/" title="staggering">staggering</a> results reported by Apple (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=AAPL" class="ticker" title="AAPL">NSDQ: AAPL</a>) last night, this should come as little surprise: the company&#8217;s iPhone is back on top as the bestselling smartphone in the U.S. Android has managed to hold on to its position in the UK but there, too, Apple massively increased its share of sales, according to data out today from WPP&#8217;s Kantar Worldpanel ComTech.
</p><p>In the U.S. in the last 12 weeks, Apple&#8217;s iOS platform accounted for 44.9 percent of all smartphone sales, just edging out the collective power of Android, which took 44.8 percent of sales. In the UK, Android managed to hold on to its lead at 43.9 percent of all sales, while Apple took 34 percent of sales. In the rest of the markets surveyed by Kantar Worldpanel, Android also remained in the lead (see full table below).</p>

<p>But even with Android still at the top, Apple seems to be the one showing more momentum in the top markets, and Kantar&#8217;s analyst Dominic Sunnebo notes that iOS overall grew more on average across all the nine markets that it pinpoints as a sales barometer than Android did.</p>

<p>The UK now has a smartphone penetration of 48.9 percent, says Kantar Worldpanel. A corresponding figure was not provided for other markets surveyed.</p>

<p>Drilling down, Apple&#8217;s iOS grew its market share more than any other platform maker in both the U.S. and UK, with growth of 22.6 percent and 12 percent respectively. Android, however, continues to show the strongest momentum in other European markets like Germany, Italy and Spain. It also grew the most in Australia, a hotly contested market where Apple is currently battling it out against Samsung over patents and device injunctions.</p>

<p>In what might be worrying news ahead of Nokia&#8217;s quarterly results tomorrow, Windows Phone, Microsoft&#8217;s OS that is used in Nokia&#8217;s new range of smartphone devices, has not managed to break the two percent mark for sales in any single market surveyed by Kantar Worldpanel. The most popular countries for WP7 devices, says Kantar Worldpanel, were the U.S., where it took 1.9 percent of sales; and the UK where it accounted or 1.7 percent of sales.&nbsp; </p>

<p>In some markets, in fact, Microsoft&#8217;s old mobile OS, Windows Mobile, is still selling better than the new one. Such is the case in Germany, France and Spain.</p>

<p>BlackBerry: Interestingly, Sunnebo notes that RIM&#8217;s smartphone brand remains the &#8220;gifting&#8221; brand of choice, with 57 percent of all BlackBerry devices purchased in the quarter as gifts, with that number going up to 76 percent in December, with some 55 percent of recipients under the age of 16. That&#8217;s an interesting signal of how BlackBerry is already considered something of an entry-level smartphone (and perhaps a confirmation of new CEO Thorsten Heins&#8217; contention that RIM (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=RIMM" class="ticker" title="RIMM">NSDQ: RIMM</a>) does not have to &#8216;dumb down&#8217; its line of devices to pick up new users.)</p>

<p>And while we&#8217;ve seen some attention in the last couple of days to what is happening in the Latin American and Brazil mobile markets&#8212;Apple hiring a new GM for the region, and Nokia (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=NOK" class="ticker" title="NOK">NYSE: NOK</a>) claiming some kind of feature phone supremacy there with the sale of its 1.5 billionth feature phone in the region&#8212;Android, too, can lay claim to a strong position there: it took a 28 percent share in Brazil and a 20 percent share in Mexico. In Brazil, Symbian remained the strongest platform, while in Mexico, RIM overtook Symbian as the most popular platform, as Nokia&#8217;s older smartphone platform saw big declines in both countries.</p>

					<p>One day before <a href="http://www.nokia.com" title="Nokia">Nokia</a> is due to announce its next set of quarterly results, Nokia (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=NOK" class="ticker" title="NOK">NYSE: NOK</a>) has made three announcements: a milestone reached with Series 40 feature phone purchases, and a buyer for its manufacturing plant in Romania, and a re-casting of its quarterly results for the three quarters preceding the one getting reported tomorrow.
</p><p>Considering it is unlikely that Nokia will have arrested the declines it has been posting in revenues and market share for the past several quarters, the first two news items are more likely being released now to get investors in a good mood before breaking them the less good news tomorrow. </p>

<p>It is also another signal to the public that Nokia is moving swiftly along in its strategy to change up, in the wake of the famous &#8220;<a href="http://moconews.net/article/419-who-will-put-the-fire-out-on-nokias-burning-platform/" title="burning platform">burning platform</a>&#8221; memo sent out by CEO Stephen Elop (pictured) almost a year ago today.</p>

<p><strong>Series 40</strong>. Nokia today announced that it had sold its 1.5 billionth Series 40 feature phone. The sale, appropriately enough, was made in Brazil&#8212;which, with the rest of the BRIC block, is a market that all big handset makers are sizing up as the next big target for mobile growth. </p>

<p>It was only yesterday that news emerged that Apple (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=AAPL" class="ticker" title="AAPL">NSDQ: AAPL</a>) had hired a person (a Brazilian) to oversee Latin America. The Series 40 operating system is a proprietary OS of Nokia&#8217;s that is worth watching: earlier this month the company bought <a href="http://paidcontent.org/article/419-nokia-buys-norways-smarterphone-to-spruce-up-its-feature-phone-os/" title="Smarterphone">Smarterphone</a> to enhance its feature phones, and these devices are being seen by Nokia, Samsung and others as a key ramping-up route to eventual smartphone users. </p>

<p>So much so that <a href="http://paidcontent.org/article/419-rims-ceo-call-the-board-unanimously-voted-for-the-new-ceo/" title="RIM's new CEO">RIM&#8217;s new CEO</a> had to face a question from an analyst on his first day in the job about whether BlackBerry would be considering a similar route to be able to pick up more users in emerging markets. (For the record, Thorsten Heins didn&#8217;t seem to warm to the idea.)</p>

<p>Nokia definitely wants to highlight its activity in the region of Latin America: in the last quarter (Q3) the company reported that revenues had declined by seven percent to $531 million and unit sales by six percent to 10.9 million devices.</p>

<p><strong>Romania</strong>. Meanwhile, another step was completed in Nokia&#8217;s downsizing strategy, as the company found a buyer for its plant in Romania, closed down in November 2011 as part of its <a href="http://paidcontent.org/article/419-nokia-to-chop-1300-people-from-its-navteq-mappingcommerce-division/" title="cost-cutting program">cost-cutting program</a>. The plant had been used to make feature phones, but now it will be used to make home appliances for De&#8217;Longhi, the Italian home appliances maker. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, and it&#8217;s not clear whether any of Nokia&#8217;s former employees were included as part of the transfer deal. </p>

<p><strong>Lastly, the re-stated results</strong>. As Nokia said that it would, the company has also now published a recast list of figures for financial quarters covering the previous two years. It says that it has done this mainly to account for how it has regrouped its mapping assets, NAVTEQ (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=NVT" class="ticker" title="NVT">NYSE: NVT</a>) with its social location services, which used to be part of Nokia&#8217;s Devices &amp; Services segment but are now together form a new division, Location &amp; Commerce. </p>

<p>Important to note that these are not re-reported results: for example, Nokia&#8217;s operating loss for Q3 was still €71 million, no matter how you cut it.</p>

<p><strong>Looking ahead to Thursday</strong>. Mobile people will be watching tomorrow&#8217;s results eagerly, not least because they want to see if Nokia includes some meaningful numbers about early sales of its new Windows Phone 7 smartphones. There has been a lot of dispute about how well these have been going: a report earlier this week indicated that Nokia had shipped <a href="http://paidcontent.org/article/419-analysts-nokia-shipped-around-1.3-million-lumias-in-two-months/" title="1.3 million Lumia devices">1.3 million Lumia devices</a>, although some back-of-the-napkin analysis from <a href="http://www.ben-evans.com/post/16363995144/windows-phone" title="Benedict Evans">Benedict Evans</a> gave a far lower number for the number of phones that Nokia may have actually sold: between 300,000 and 400,000.</p>

<p>One operator <a href="http://paidcontent.org/article/419-to-buy-or-not-to-buy-nokia-struggles-to-manage-lumia-800-sales-message/" title="claimed">claimed</a> that their stock of Lumia devices, while figures from one retailer in the UK provided to paidContent indicated that Nokia&#8217;s Lumia 800&#8212;its first WP device in the UK&#8212;accounted for only <a href="http://paidcontent.org/article/419-report-nokia-lumia-accounted-for-only-0.17-percent-of-uk-sales-in-novem/" title="0.17 percent of sales">0.17 percent of sales</a> in its first weeks on sale in the UK.</p>

<p>All of these are problematic in their own way, so hopefully Nokia will put a full stop to some of these question marks tomorrow.

</p><p>Those revenues were slightly lower than the $1.19 billion expected by analysts polled by none other than Yahoo Finance.</p>

<p>Earnings per share stood at 24 cents&#8212;exactly the same as Q4 2010, and in line with analysts&#8217; expectations. That probably comes as some relief to investors, considering all the turmoil the company has seen in the past year: changes have included a new CEO, numerous executive departures, an overhaul of its advertising system to partner up with Microsoft (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=MSFT" class="ticker" title="MSFT">NSDQ: MSFT</a>) and AOL (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=AOL" class="ticker" title="AOL">NYSE: AOL</a>), and continuing loss of market share in both display and search to other competitors like Google.</p>

<p>The numbers and business situation of Yahoo couldn&#8217;t be more different from Apple (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=AAPL" class="ticker" title="AAPL">NSDQ: AAPL</a>), which also reported earnings moments ago with sales of $46 billion for the quarter.</p>

<p>Some of the particulars from the Yahoo&#8217;s <a href="http://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20120124006664/en/Yahoo!-Reports-Fourth-Quarter-Full-Year-2011" title="results release">results release</a>:</p>

<p>&#8212;Display revenue was $612 million, a four percent decrease compared to $635 million for the fourth quarter of 2010. For the full-year they were actually slightly up: $2.16 billion compared to $2.15 billion in 2010.<br />&#8212;Search revenue was $465 million, down a massive 27 percent compared to $640 million for the fourth quarter of 2010.<br />&#8212;North America revenue was $885 million, down from $991 million for the quarter last year.</p>

<p>Yahoo will be hosting an investor call to go through the earnings, and for its new CEO, Scott Thompson, to give a few more particulars about the state of the company. A call with investors and media <a href="http://paidcontent.org/article/419-what-the-analysts-asked-yahoo-today-and-how-the-new-ceo-responded/" title="three weeks ago when his appointment was announced">three weeks ago when his appointment was announced</a> were very light on specifics. We&#8217;ll update this post as that proceeds.</p>

<p><strong>Update</strong>: The call is kicking off with a few words from Thompson. &#8220;I&#8217;ve validated what I believed coming in, the talent of the people and the huge opportunity ahead of us,&#8221; said Thompson. &#8220;I believe we have a lot of work to do and it&#8217;s still early.&#8221; He says that at the moment Yahoo has 702 million unique visitors worldwide. He says he will lay out the foundations for what he plans for 2012.</p>

<p>He says in the future he will provide more insight about the details of results covering regional differences.</p>

<p>&#8220;There is no question we need to do better and we will,&#8221; he says. &#8220;We need to better monetize the engagement that we have.&#8221;</p>

<p>Display was mainly affected by declines in the Americas&#8212;it actually grew in Asia Pacific and Europe, while declining in the U.S.</p>

<p>The sales force is getting overhauled, according to CFO Tim Morse. &#8220;Several major advertisers that reduced spend in 2011&#8230;have made meaningful commitments or 2012.&#8221;</p>

<p>Unique visitors are up by 11 percent around Yahoo&#8217;s &#8220;tent pole&#8221; events such as the Super Bowl, the Royal Wedding and others. Yahoo is putting more, Morse says, into its &#8220;editorial voice,&#8221; with the creation of original content. One recent notable announcement there is the project with Tom Hanks; another is the creation of Livestand.</p>

<p>Some frank and slightly depressing words that really size up not just the challenge ahead but perhaps hint at employee morale? &#8220;Despite these changes, revenue isn&#8217;t growing,&#8221; said Morse. &#8220;We expected better.&#8221; </p>

<p>Back to Thompson who gives a very robust pep talk for the future, which sounded very encouraging except that it&#8217;s Yahoo we&#8217;re talking about, which has been the subject of many robust speeches over the years. Some highlights:</p>

<p>&#8220;Our users need to use our services more frequently&#8230;We need to be a media company as well as a tech company.&#8221;</p>

<p>&#8220;I make decisions quickly and move fast, fast, fast. That&#8217;s how we get to playing offense rather than defense.&#8221;</p>

<p>&#8220;We will focus on balancing our investment resources and allocation of capital on products of today, tomorrow and long term&#8230;To strike the right balance, we need to focus on the products that are driving results today. But also the business of tomorrow. But also a small but meaningful percentage on products that will play out 12 months from now.&#8221;</p>

<p>&#8220;At least two fundamental building blocks customer experience and data&#8230;We want our users to spend more time with yahoo because they love what we are doing.&#8221;</p>

<p>&#8220;Data is the most underrated asset at Yahoo.&#8221;</p>

<p>&#8220;I believe our company can do much more to innovate and disrupt.&#8221;</p>

<p>Some questions from the analysts:</p>

<p><strong>Future acquisitions?</strong><br />
These will be made to fill technology gaps, said Thompson.</p>

<p><strong>What&#8217;s your strategy to turn around display?</strong><br />
Alas, no specifics but this: &#8220;We&#8217;re meeting with customers to understand why they don&#8217;t give us more of their spend. We&#8217;re after this with a real sense of urgency. Too early to say what actions we might take but full intention is to get that back and growing at a healthy rate.</p>

<p><strong>Are there no sacred cows going forward? And what about premium video, any new deals?</strong><br />
Thompson: &#8220;I could interpret the first question in a variety of ways, as part of the work we&#8217;re doing we are understanding and evaluating all options going forward. Things we will continue, stop, and additional monetization strategies. We are being aggressive.&#8221;<br />

Morse: &#8220;As for short-form, we had 9 of the top 10 original shows for web programing. We need to do more there (no numbers disclosed on traffic).&#8221; </p>

<p><strong>What products do you think are appropriate areas for Yahoo to move into? And what about the declines in search?<br />
</strong>Thompson: &#8220;Too early for strategic framework but we are looking at how to increase monetization.&#8221; Morse: &#8220;On search, in mobile it&#8217;s still too early on for how you monetize going forward. There is a lot yet left to evolve in mobile. I&#8217;m not concerned, I&#8217;m optimistic.&#8221; Thompson: &#8220;No winner has shown himself visible in mobile search.&#8221; (Google (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=GOOG" class="ticker" title="GOOG">NSDQ: GOOG</a>) might beg to differ here.)

</p><p>&#8220;I actually think we&#8217;re entering the age of video now&#8230;some people think we&#8217;re already there but I think we&#8217;re just getting started,&#8221; he <a href="http://http://new.livestream.com/channels/546/videos/113926" title="told an audience">told an audience</a> at the <a href="http://www.dld-conference.com/" title="DLD">DLD</a> digital media conference in Munich, Germany. </p>

<p>He predicted that digital video consumption will &#8220;rise for the next many years&#8221; as bandwidth to the home continues to grow, and new devices make it easier to consume more content than ever before. </p>

<p>News Corp. like many other TV producers, has long been preparing itself for a time when that TV content is watched on anything but a TV, with the launch of online video and apps for new screens like those of tablets and smartphones. &#8220;TV is no longer a device,&#8221; he said. &#8220;It is a concept, and people go where the best screen is.&#8221;</p>

<p>And rather than simply ramping up the amount of content that News Corp.&#8216;s video properties produce&#8212;they include broadcasters like Fox as well as the film studio 20th Century Fox&#8212;Miller says that it is turning to News Corp. businesses that are traditionally more tied with written content, in what sounds like a very decentralized, try-everything-and-see-what-works approach to the space.</p>

<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re producing everything across the board now,&#8221; said Miller. &#8220;[Because] we&#8217;re focused on video&#8230;we&#8217;re trying to move our print publications into video, too.&#8221; That includes training Wall Street Journal reporters to &#8220;take videos on their iPhones,&#8221; as well as write.</p>

<p>And gaming site IGN, which originally started life as a collection of titles reviewing games, is running a dedicated channel on Microsoft&#8217;s Xbox, as well as the YouTube (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=GOOG" class="ticker" title="GOOG">NSDQ: GOOG</a>) channel dedicated to gaming. &#8220;We won the bakeoff for the YouTube channel last year,&#8221; said Miller, referring to YouTube&#8217;s strategy to launch 100 new premium content channels covering a variety of interests. </p>

<p>He also noted that through IGN News Corp is once again looking at how it might develop its own gaming content&#8212;this is something that it had tried to do through its old subsidiary Fox Mobile, although that content division, including the production studios, was sold off last year to Jesta Digital. The company seems to be taking a more cautious approach than in the past: &#8220;We are putting our toe into the water with casual games,&#8221; said Miller. &#8220;Playing games is a bedrock so we want to learn and earn our way into that.&#8221;</p>

<p>Miller was interviewed on stage by DLD&#8217;s chairman, Yossi Vardi, who noted that he once worked with Miller for four years, and also that DLD had been trying to get Miller to speak at the event for the past three years. </p>

<p>These two hooks might be part of the reason why Miller was thrown quite a few softballs in the interview. In other words, no questions about how News Corp. can avoid another <a href="http://paidcontent.org/article/419-myspace-restructure-and-digital-write-offs-cost-news-corp-275-mill/" title="MySpace">MySpace</a> or <a href="http://paidcontent.org/article/419-jesta-digital-formerly-fox-mobile-loses-execs-weighs-up-bitbops-future/" title="Fox Mobile">Fox Mobile</a> investment (both written off and sold off) in its search for the next big revenue stream. </p>

<p>Nor were there any questions at all about the best business models for delivering that new material: News Corp has been strong on paywalls for its written content so far&#8212;with paid subscriptions required for much of the Wall Street Journal and The Times in London&#8212;would Miller and News Corp consider extending that to more of its video content?</p>

<p>One area where Vardi did press Miller a bit was on the Megaupload closure and how content companies are going after the &#8220;little guy&#8221; in their pursuit of copyright protection. Aren&#8217;t you ashamed your industry is chasing small kids who want to have some fun, asked Vardi.</p>

<p>&#8220;I think you&#8217;re confusing us with the music industry. We don&#8217;t do that,&#8221; answered Miller. &#8220;What you&#8217;re getting at is what is the proper way to protect copyright&#8230;.There has to be a way for freedoms to be respected and for copyright to be respected.&#8221;</p>

<p>That is an issue that has yet to find a definitive solution from many of Miller&#8217;s peers, and perhaps Miller himself. &#8220;The industry takes a while to embrace new technologies,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We&#8217;re doing it as an industry but it&#8217;s a different world.&#8221;</p>

<p>That world, in Miller&#8217;s view, has discounted content to almost nothing, in order to shift value to other parts of the ecosystem&#8212;a complaint often heard from those in the content industry in the face of juggernaut&#8217;s like Apple (<a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&Ticker=AAPL" class="ticker" title="AAPL">NSDQ: AAPL</a>) and Google, which respectively are more interested in pushing hardware sales and advertising for their own business models, offering easy and cheap access to content as part of the deal for consumers.</p>

<p>&#8220;Distributors have different businesses now,&#8221; he explained. &#8220;It&#8217;s not just to make money on the content as before.&#8221; &#8220;[Those who make hardware, or sell advertising] would like to keep the value of content low.&#8221; He said that this will eventually need to get &#8220;rebalanced&#8221; in the future. Whether that means more moves to paid content, or more advertising initiatives&#8212;or even partnerships on devices&#8212;remains to be seen.

It&#8217;s preliminary, but it could be a sign that Nokia&#8217;s bet on Windows Phone is paying dividends.
</p><p><a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-01-22/nokia-lumia-sales-seen-topping-1-million-in-respite-for-stock.html" title="Bloomberg">Bloomberg</a> surveyed 22 financial analysts who follow the company and determined that the average projection for Lumia shipments was 1.3 million units, which is a pretty good total in just the two months the device was on sale and before it made its debut in the U.S. The usual caveat about looking at device totals in terms of &#8220;shipments&#8221; rather than &#8220;sales&#8221; certainly applies, as Bloomberg&#8217;s analysis doesn&#8217;t take into account whether or not wireless carriers and retail outlets ordered a lot of devices from Nokia only to be stuck with excess inventory.</p>

<p>But it does show that at least in Europe, Nokia&#8217;s first Windows Phone 7 models carried enough of a buzz to make retailers want to stock them during the holiday season. Nokia reports earnings later this week and might have official details to share about shipment totals, but is unlikely to share sell-through data for such a new product this early in the game, in keeping with the practices of many mobile industry companies.</p>

</p><p>Polar also today released some numbers that attests to the growth of the apps economy&#8212;and to its own business. It says that it currently works with some 380 media brands in 12 countries. It has served 1.6 billion page views for some 11 million users to-date across the many apps that it has produced.</p>

<p>The $6 million round was led by <a href="http://www.georgianpartners.com/" title="Georgian Partners">Georgian Partners</a> and takes the total invested in the company to $9 million, with the previous $3 million coming from private investors. </p>

<p>Georgian, which based in Toronto like Polar, has a portfolio that includes another app developer, <a href="http://www.kony.com" title="Kony Solutions">Kony Solutions</a>, as well as a number of other platform-based B2B digital media startups. (Two others include Shopify and Terapeak, which are used by retail e-commerce companies.)</p>

<p>Meanwhile, the new product line, branded MediaEverywhere, effectively does what it says on the label: it is HTML-5 based and is aimed at letting publishers make apps that can get used on different platforms and devices&#8212;not just mobiles and tablets but also desktop computers, and not just native apps but web browsers, too. </p>

<p>Working across different platforms is a trend we&#8217;ve seem among other app developers&#8212;but given the client line-up that Polar already has, this is a significant sign of how that kind of strategic view is taking shape among publishers investing in apps. Research from <a href="http://paidcontent.org/article/419-11-of-magazine-readers-are-digital-only-survey-shows/" title="GfK">GfK</a> last year showed that some 11 percent of magazine views are now digital-only&#8212;a number that is on the rise, with publishers all making sure that they will be along for the ride.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s worth pointing out that Polar already offered a degree of cross-platform development before today: its SmartTM product lets content be formatted for iPhone, iPad, Android, BlackBerry, PlayBook, Windows Phone and Nokia&#8217;s Symbian platform; however now web apps are being added into the mix.</p>

<p>Kunal Gupta, the CEO of Polar, tells paidContent that is has some publishers already on the platform but is not announcing any client names just yet.</p>

<p>Some publishers&#8212;notably the FT&#8212;are buying up/bringing in-house their third-party developers in order to have a better grip on how they develop their apps, and to make sure that they continue to have an edge on their competitors. That presents an interesting challenge for a third-party company like Polar: will it, too, eventually get swallowed up by one of its customers, or will it find it hard in the longer term to attract business from the big-name publishers who will continue to invest in having that expertise in-house?</p>
