News Corp surpassed analyst expectations in quarterly earnings announced today, but the numbers reflected two wildly divergent trends.

On one hand, the company posted impressive growth in its TV, cable and movie businesses. These segments resulted in a $210 million year-over-year quarterly earnings increase and adjusted earnings per share of $0.39 which is better than the $0.34 analysts had predicted.

At the same time, the company announced a 43 percent decline in its publishing business and a quarterly charge of $87 million related to the UK phone hacking settlement.

On an afternoon earnings call, News Corp executives said that about 85 percent of the charge was for lawyers and advisers and the rest for legal settlements. They added that they could not go into details about future settlements but that the “priority is to make this right.” The company says it spent $104 million in 2011 on costs related to the investigation.

The hacking-related charges were not included in the publishing category where the company’s UK and Australia newspapers are experiencing collapsing revenues. The company also said it expected income from its UK newspapers to drop $150 million in the coming year.

Publishing reported second quarter segment operating income of $218 million, a $162 million or 43% decrease compared to the $380 million reported a year ago, reflecting lower advertising revenues at the Australian newspapers and the integrated marketing services business, as well as the absence of contributions from the closure of The News of the World in the U.K.

Analysts, however, appeared less interested in the scandal than in the company’s surging TV and entertainment businesses. The strong performance in these segments was driven in part by the popularity of Fox (NSDQ: NWS) News, FX cable and hit movies like Rio and an Alvin and the Chipmunks.

News Corp also enjoyed strong results from its affiliate BSkyB (NYSE: BSY) which posted improved quarterly income of $174 million compared to $109 million one year ago.

The company also said it expects a reinvigorated performance from Dow Jones as a result of a new CEO, a strong brand and new digital platforms.

Mail Online may have overtaken The New York Times’ website for global audience, according to comScore (NSDQ: SCOR) - but, in reality, the two are still an ocean apart.

The macho, competitive ethos of London’s old Fleet Street, on which newspaper executives celebrate beating each other’s circulation, has spilled over on to the web and is being fought across the Atlantic. Mail Online’s meteoric rise, which the company on Wednesday said gives it almost 100 million monthly uniques. is rightly admired.

But that dead-tree machismo is not necessarily the right lens through which to look and comparisons are not helpful. A&N Media’s fast-growing news and pictures vehicle is no more competing with The New York Times (NYSE: NYT) than Coca-Cola is with cod liver oil…

Different content: One is laden with celebrity gossip, bikini photos and outrageous news and features written so expertly succinctly that readers just have to click. The other is a sobre, reflective and, some might say, banal examination of the machinations of American public life and culture. (While NYTimes.com’s U.S. page led with Court Strikes Down Ban on Gay Marriage in California this week, Mail Online’s was splashing with ‘My adoptive father poured hot sauce in my ears, glued my eyes shut and starved us’).

Different businesses: If the two titles aren’t chasing the same audiences, they also aren’t fighting for the same advertisers. While NYTimes.com runs campaigns for $500 handbags, Manhattan apartments and Indian bridalwear, Mail Online advertises WeightWatchers, home telecom services and discount wine.

So, the Mail may now be operating in the same U.S. geography as the Times, but the pair aren’t necessarily competing head-on.

Although they each occupy the “online news” space together, observers of that sector who draw linear conclusions from Mail Online “overtaking” NYTimes.com’s traffic have got it wrong.

For one, the handover must be seen in two quite distinct but important contexts…

NYTimes’ introduction of metered charging early in 2011 has, naturally, negatively impacted upon its web visits.

Mail Online likely has not gained NYTimes.com readers but has acquired its new audience under its own steam from what was a flat start.

None of this is to denigrate Mail Online’s journey. Whilst some criticise the website’s sensationalist bent as much as the newspaper’s political tactics, it has shown how to build a big online news audience in a new country.

But Mail Online isn’t benefitting because it’s eating NYTimes.com’s dinner, and it doesn’t necessarily matter that one’s traffic has surpassed the other - in a still-growing market like the internet, all boats rise.

It is truer to say mass-market U.S. newspaper websites (National Enquirer? New York Post?) face a greater threat from Mail Online than NYTimes.com does. But it may be even truer to wonder if the U.S. as a whole has ever quite seen anything like Mail Online.

Whatever, one must at least compare apples with apples.

McClatchy (NYSE: MNI) Company’s fourth quarter operating earnings beat analysts’ predictions, while the newspaper chain also reported an overall boost from investments in online properties like Cars.com and Apartments.com.

In figures released this morning, McClatchy announced earnings of $0.49 per share which surpassed analyst predictions of $0.35. Total operating income for the quarter was $90.3 million, compared to $89.3 million a year ago.

Overall, it appears McClatchy’s deep cost-cutting and ongoing debt reduction have resulted in a stable business operation that is being supplemented by successful online investments. Dividends from these investments, which also include CareerBuilder.com, together contributed $28.8 million to McClatchy’s net income in 2011. The company also reported strong growth in its daily-deal product.

Despite this good news, McClatchy faces the same race against time as other newspaper chains which are losing print revenues faster than they can grow digital ones. While the bottom line of papers like the Miami Herald and El Neuvo Herald are improving and circulation has stabilized, print advertising fell by about 5% in the quarter.

Another sign of concern for McClatchy and other newspaper chains is sluggish growth in digital advertising. Sales in the category actually declined 2% in the quarter for McClatchy but this reflects the fact that many digital ads were sold as a bundle with print ads. McClatchy said pure digital sales increased 7.5%. Overall, though, digital still accounts for less than a quarter of the company’s ad revenues.

McClatchy’s share price was up 15% to $2.59 in mid-morning trading.

About.com is in free fall. The New York Times (NYSE: NYT) revealed yesterday that its network of information sites suffered a 67% drop in profits and that revenues had fallen by a quarter.

The new figures come at a time when the New York Times Company is trying to forge a digital strategy based on high quality content and the prestige of its flagship brand. About’s problems could present a distraction as NYT Co seeks to implement that strategy.

Looking at the company today, it’s hard to recall that About.com was once one of the hottest properties on the web. When the NYT Co paid $410 million to acquire the site in 2005, it reportedly beat out other media giants like Google (NSDQ: GOOG) and Time (NYSE: TWX) Warner.

Despite the stiff price tag, the purchase for a time looked shrewd as About.com generated steady profits while growing its revenues from $80.2 million in 2006 to $136 million in 2010.

This growth, however, was fueled in part by the acquisition of niche sites like ConsumerSeach.com which the NYT Co bought for $33 million in 2007. Perhaps tellingly, the company had to write down the value of that site last quarter. It also divested another site that was part of the About group, UcompareHealth, early in 2011.

The biggest worry, though, is that the decline of About.com itself may be irreversible. Fewer people are clicking on About ads placed by Google and the site’s own display ads have dropped in value.

The company has attributed this decline in value to Google’s decision last year to downgrade About pages in its search results. With more than 80% of traffic coming from search, the Google denigration was indeed a blow but About’s problems may be rooted in something deeper.

Namely, it’s unclear if About is still viable as a brand. While the company launched a marketing campaign in 2010 to differentiate it from other “how-to” sites, there’s little evidence the message resonated with users. While readers may seek out individual About “guides,” the 80% search traffic figure reflects how About remains a detour not a destination for the vast majority of visitors.

These fortuitous attributes appear to conflict with the NYT Co.‘s strategy of building a digital brand around famous, high-quality content.

On yesterday’s earnings call, New York Times executives responded to analysts’ skepticism by noting that About is in the process of reinvigorating its sales force under a new management team. The company appointed long-time CFO Darline Jean to take over the CEO job last July after her predecessor was forced out after a three-year stint.

If there’s a bright side, it’s that About reportedly has 60 million unique monthly visitors and that, for now, it is still profitable. But going forward, it’s hard to see About reacquiring its former cachet anytime soon.

Fenwick has been at Bloomberg for the past 25 years, most recently as founder and CEO of VC fund and startup incubator Bloomberg Ventures. Before that, he was CEO of Bloomberg LP. His new position is effective February 13. He will report to Chase Carey, President and COO of News Corp.

The Financial Times reported last week that Fenwick was in the running for the Dow Jones CEO position, noting “the talks with Mr Fenwick surprised some media executives, who noted his limited experience with advertising, one of the biggest sources of revenue for the Wall Street Journal, and with editorial operations. Bloomberg News was under the command of Matt Winkler while Mr. Fenwick was chief executive.”

In a statement, News Corp. chairman and CEO Rupert Murdoch said, “We have clearly established WSJ as the premium consumer newspaper and we are thrilled that Lex will be driving our plans to grow all our Dow Jones franchises into true innovative market leaders for today’s digital world. We believe our enterprise business has the potential to follow the brand’s success in the consumer space, and be the premier product in providing the kind of hard-to-find, premium content that the financial customer demands. We are committed to making it happen and we think Lex is the executive to get us there.”

Late last year, the New York Times (NYSE: NYT) relaunched its tech blog to add more reporters and more video—in hopes of pulling in more ad revenue. That followed an even larger buildup of its business and finance blog, Deal Book. Now, the company will be giving the same treatment to its health blog, Well.

A New York Times executive mentioned the move on the earnings call Thursday. On the call, Chief Financial Officer Jame Follo said advertisers were enthusiastic about the idea of making both the tech and health blogs more attractive to a business-to-business audience. In the case of Bits, launched last November, the company is aiming to challenge the preeminence of the Wall Street Journal’s ‘All Things D’ among technophiles.

The call followed the release of earnings this morning that showed ongoing declines in NYT Co.‘s overall revenues and profits.

On the call, Follo also pointed to a series of features designed to entice users to pay for digital content. These include one-click subscriptions in iTunes, free Kindle and Nook access for subscribers, and group accounts for corporate and educational users.

In response to analysts’ questions about the company’s announced 20% quarterly increase in digital subscribers, Follo said the total number of 390,000 included figures for online readers of the New York Times, the International Herald Tribune and The Boston Globe. About 57,000 of the subscribers came via e-readers (this figure doesn’t account for new holiday subscribers).

The new Boston Globe site, which was launched in October, has 16,000 subscribers while the IHT has about 10,000.

Follo added that while many new subscribers were offered a 99 cent introductory rate for the first month, the “conversion rate is very strong.”

The company also enjoyed its first increase in home delivery in five years. In 2012, it raised subscriber prices by 4% and newsstand prices by 50 cents.

Despite its growing online subscriber base, the NYT Co still faces significant strategic challenges as print advertising declined 7.9% from the same quarter a year ago. Analysts also expressed concern about the dismal showing of the company’s About.com unit where digital revenues fell by 25% and overall profit by 67%. Executives said the decline was due to a fall-off in prices and click-through rates and by About.com’s content being downgraded in Google’s search algorithm.

Chairman and chief executive officer Arthur Sulzberger, Jr., said the company is still in the early stages of a search to replace former CEO Janet Robinson who was fired in December.

Higher online circulation was a small bright spot in an otherwise gloomy earnings report for the New York Times Company (NYSE: NYT), which is still looking for a CEO who can implement a comprehensive digital strategy.

The NYT Co numbers, announced this morning, showed operating profit for Q4 declined to $106.6 million compared to $111.6 million for the same period a year ago. Revenues fell to $643 million, a 2.8% drop off.

The company’s earnings were $0.39 per share which is lower than the $0.41 analysts had predicted. The number reflects one-off charges, including severance costs tied to former CEO Janet Robinson who was forced out in December. Without the special charges, the company would have posted earnings of $0.45 per share.

In the bigger picture, the announcement reflects the familiar story of a newspaper property facing advertising declines that have yet to be offset by new digital dollars.

Revenue from print advertising fell 7.8% and digital advertising revenues dropped too—by 4.9%.

The drop in digital revenues would be a cause for alarm but for the fact that they stem from a drop in cost-per-click and display advertising at the About.com group.

If About.com is excluded, digital revenues at the New Media Group (which includes core properties like the Times) grew by 10% to $233.5 million.

Also encouraging is a 20% increase in digital subscribers which coincides with an expanded use of paywalls at the company.

Total paid subscribers to digital subscription packages, e-readers and replica editions of The Times and the International Herald Tribune totaled approximately 390,000 at the end of the year. The Boston Globe equivalents had 16,000 paid subscribers.

The numbers did not reflect the company’s recent sale of its Regional Media Group of sixteen newspapers in the south. The sale will result in proceeds of about $150 million, including tax benefits, which the company is expected to use to further its digital strategy.

In morning trading, NYT Co shares were off about 1.3% to $7.57.

paidContent will have more analysis following an earnings call that is taking place later this morning.

The Village Voice is giving up on a scheme to force rivals to pay for permission to use the phrase “best of.”

The one-time counter culture icon set off snorts of derision in November after it sued weekly magazine Time Out New York over its annual ‘best of’ issue.

Lawyers for the parties confirmed today that a settlement is imminent. The development comes two weeks after Time (NYSE: TWX) Out New York filed a counter-suit to strip Village Voice of its ‘Best of NYC’ trademark right on the grounds the term is: “merely descriptive, if not generic .. for lists of New York City’s best restaurants, movies, plays and things to do.”

Although the lawyers would not discuss details of the settlement, the move appears to be a capitulation for the Village Voice whose editor told Gothamist shortly after the suit was filed, “This might come as a shock to some people, but since October 26, 1955, the Village Voice has been a for-profit business. If you want to remain a for-profit business and someone steals from you, it is generally unwise to do nothing.”

Village Voice Media, which publishes about a dozen weekly newspapers, also owns other trademarks such as “Best of Dallas” and “Best of Denver.”

Here in New York, we’re betting the Village Voice is unlikely to appear on “best new business idea” lists anytime soon.

Gannett (NYSE: GCI) Co. posted lower than expected earnings for the fourth quarter of 2011 after incurring special charges related to workforce restructuring and asset write-downs. A report also showed that its newspaper empire continues to struggle but that its digital business is up 11 percent for the year.

Gannett posted earnings of $0.49 a share for the fourth quarter, compared to $0.72 a share for the same quarter one year ago. Analysts had predicted earnings of $0.68.

The company noted that its earnings would have been $0.72 a share if it excluded special items. These included expenses related to the unexpected departure in October of its CEO due to health reasons and writedowns related to brands whose market values have diminished due to poor performance.

Advertising revenue from Gannett’s newspapers, including flagship USA Today, continued to decline as sales of real estate and legal ads were particularly soft. Overall advertising revenues in the publishing sector were $670.7 million in the quarter, compared to $722.3 million in the fourth quarter last year, a 7 percent decline.

Gannett’s broadcasting revenues, which have been a bright spot in recent quarters, also fell 14.2 percent in light of what the company says was weaker spending on political ads. This quarter, TV-related revenue was $199.8 million.

The most optimistic part of the report are Gannett’s digital operations, which are both profitable and growing. The company cited particularly strong results at its Career Building site as helping to drive $185 million in digital revenue last quarter, a 9.1 percent increase from a year ago. If digital revenues related to publishing are folded in, the company had digital revenues of $290.3 million for the quarter.

Gannett says its USAToday.com website and related apps are among the most popular on the web and that its consolidated domestic Internet audience share was 50.8 million unique visitors. It says its Newsquest product in the UK is also popular.

The numbers were announced prior to the market opening. Gannett’s stock fell has since almost five percent to $14.48 in morning trading while the general market was down less than one percent.

“For me, Spotify is a victim of the conundrum that almost all internet industries have yet to resolve — when you can get something so good for free, why pay?”

That is ironic because it is the same argument some onlookers use to suggest The Times’ own payment strategy “won’t work” (you’ll need to be a subscriber to read Ford’s piece).

Let’s compare…

Spotify’s raison d’être is making the listening experience so appealing and easy that people will want to pay for it rather than download illegally or elsewhere for free.

It’s having some success within that. Having racked up three million paying subscribers from an apparent 15 million active users for a conversion rate of 20 percent, it has built the world’s largest music subscription business.

That is at a price slightly more than The Times’ own monthly news package, which does not come with a free trial in the same way Spotify does.

By contrast, The Times website has slipped from around 20 million unique monthly users to 115,000 paying online subscribers - a 0.57 percent conversion.

This, however, is not a like-for-like comparison. Only a minority of The Times’ total, pre-paywall monthly uniques could ever have been considered “active” (ie. core, regular) readers, in the same way Spotify describes them. Current online subscribers as a percentage of this figure are likely far higher.

By the same token, were Spotify to express its subscriber count as a percentage of total users, it would shrink drastically. That is especially so since, lately, its first-time, free user base has been inflated by its Facebook promotion.

For many news sites, Facebook has become one of the biggest sources of referral traffic to its stories, and today the social network revealed some numbers that underscored how it is continuing to build up its cred as a news aggregator: it says it now has “thousands” of journalists using its new Subscribe feature, an enhanced, Twitter-like broadcasting service that lets those journalists engage with readers, highlight news and publicize their work, without the need for the reader and journalist to mutually follow each other.

But before you think that Subscribe has been taken over by those working in the world of blogs and digital-first news sites, think again. According to a blog post today, Facebook said that among those early adopters, the highest concentration of journalists using Subscribe were from two of the most old-school publications: Washington Post (NYSE: WPO) has more than 90 journalists using it; and The New York Times (NYSE: NYT) has over 50.

Anecdotally, people have said they are finding a lot more people are following them on Facebook than they are on Twitter. That’s not so strange: although Twitter has become the default place that many journalists hang out online today, Facebook is fundamentally a much bigger site: 300 million versus 800 million subscribers, respectively. The only surprise, given how much traffic Facebook generates for some sites, is that more journalists aren’t using it as a way to reach readers, or would-be readers. That might be because some see Facebook as a down-time activity, compared to Twitter as a work-time network. (I know I do.)

So Facebook may have a roster of thousands of engaged journalists to canvas, but it took a selection of only 25 to draw some early conclusions on how journalists are using Subscribe. Does that sound like a small number? “When it comes to qualitative, it’s enough to draw conclusions and see patterns,” Vadim Lavrusik, Journalist Program Manager & Betsy Cameron, Data Analyst, wrote in response to one person’s questioning of the sample size.

Some early take-aways from that group of 25. There will likely be some that have seen significantly different results.

—The average journalist has seen a 320 percent increase in his/her traffic since November 2011.
—People are finding journalists via friends in their news feeds (for example, through shared articles); Facebook search and Facebook’s own recommended subscriber list.
—Links are good: 62 percent of posts contain a link, and when posts have some analysis with the link, that triggers 20 percent more referral traffic.
—Questions are better: 25 percent of posts ask a question, and Facebook said that an earlier study that found posts that asked for input received 64 percent more responses from users—although those might not be click-throughs and just simple likes.
—Self-promotion actually works: 30 percent of posts contain calls to action such as “read this.” Those receive 37 percent more engagement than those without the self-promotion. Asking reads to comment also got good responses: between two and three times more engagement from subscribers.
—So do photos: surprisingly only 12 percent of posts were based around photos—but those that used them got 50 percent more “likes.” Again, no detail on how that actually translated into people reading those posts, if those posts also included links to stories.
—Videos are equally less common—only 13 percent of posts feature them.

A federal judge yesterday gave the thumbs up to a plan that will allow Lee Enterprises (NYSE: LEE) to exit bankruptcy later this month with a new debt structure. The plan will not disrupt the rights of share holders, employees and most creditors.

The plan by Lee, which publishes dozens of papers in the west and mid-west, is a “pre-packaged bankruptcy” which means its trip through court will be quick and relatively painless.

The plan will extend the maturity date for a category of notes worth $127 million until 2015 while restructuring a total of almost $1 billion in long term debt. Unlike most bankruptcies, shareholders and unsecured creditors will come through the process unscathed when Lee exits Chapter 11 on January 30.

“This is the favorable outcome we fully expected, and it provides Lee with a nearly four-year runway to continue improving our balance sheet,” said Mary Junck, chairman and chief executive officer in a statement. “The refinancing, along with our ongoing strong cash flow, will keep Lee on solid financial footing [..] Because of our intensive sales culture and evolving array of products, Lee has outpaced the industry in advertising revenue performance for 33 quarters in a row. Even in a challenging economy, more than 80% percent of adults in our larger markets read or use our print and digital products each week, including two-thirds of 18- to 29-year-olds.”

More details about the restructuring can be found in a company press release.

Mecom is to introduce digital pay models across its top newspaper titles, slash costs by €70m and potentially close or sell 65 free titles, following a wide-ranging strategic review by new chief executive Tom Toumazis.

Toumazis, the former Endemol senior executive hired in May to plot the future of the pan-European publisher, has told investors he expects the broad package to improve earnings per share – effectively profits – by 10% per year up until the end of 2014.

Under the plan Mecom intends to introduce a digital pay model with its top 10 newspapers – the group owns hundreds of titles in Scandinavia, Poland and the Netherlands – to receive paid-for apps by the end of the first quarter of 2012.

Mecom claims the top 10 titles in the group accounts for about 85% of its profits, meaning the launch of a paywall is a fundamental shift in strategy and potential revenue opportunity.

The review also includes a major restructure of the business with €70m in cost cutting by the end of 2014. Savings will come from a reduction in staff and integration of businesses and outsourcing functions where it is feasible. Mecom has already outsourced services in some markets to India.

In addition Toumazis has launched a review of Mecom’s “low margin” businesses, and has designated its portfolio of free titles as “non-core” to the publisher’s strategic vision. Mecom has revealed it has closed 15 free titles and is reviewing the future of a further 65.

The cutbacks will free €10m in cash every year until the end of 2014 for innovation in new products. Mecom has seen huge success with its online group buying business Sweetdeal.

Toumazis is also keen to make better use of the data it has on the 1.2 million paying subscribers to its newspaper titles and also aims to reinvigorate Mecom’s ad sales business, which has struggled to pull out of the downturn. Ad sales is an area he is well-versed on given his previous role as commercial director at Big Brother producer Endemol.

A critical symbolic move is shifting the “centre of gravity” of Mecom, which is listed on the UK stockmarket, to the Netherlands.

Mecom’s Dutch business, Wegener, is its flagship asset, accounting for about 45% of total revenues and 80% of operating profits.

While Toumazis and Henry Davies, Mecom’s group finance director, will not permanently relocate to the Netherlands it is expected that the pair will start spending a significant amount of time in country.

Stark new research statistics suggest digital replacement of analogue content is now very high amongst tablet owners.

Newspapers: Seventy two percent of worldwide professionals polled by IDG Connect say they are buying fewer since owning an iPad.

Books: 70 percent are buying fewer.

DVDs: 49 percent are buying fewer.

Asia and the Middle East lead the way with, respectively, 90 percent and 80 percent of respondents saying they now purchase fewer printed papers.

“These markets for physical media are already in decline,” the iPad For Business Survey 2012 concludes. “On this evidence, tablet computing will hasten their demise.

“For advertising- funded media (newspapers and magazines), the challenges are particularly substantial. Readers who can afford iPads tend to be more demographically desirable than those who cannot.”

In North America, 15 percent of respondents said they would consider buying an alternative tablet to iPad next time.

News International’s recently-appointed digital product director is trying to make the publisher more agile and innovative in digital media - and the phone hacking scandal in which the company is embroiled may even have helped the effort.

“For us, this is a huge catalyst for change actually,” Nick Bell, who joined his first corporate gig in October after a career as a young digital entrepreneur and investor, told paidContent.

“Tom Mockridge joined as CEO. When any new CEO joins an organisation, there’s going to be change. From a digital perspective, we like to think we saw it as an opportunity to drive forward some of the change.

“It’s probably had the opposite effect of slowing us down - it’s probably focused us more on how we innovate. It’s focused our minds on how we make sure the customers who are paying for our products are getting value for money, making sure we look after our customers. The focus on our customers has increased.”

Now 28, Bell was a teenage dot.com star. In 1999, he founded an early content site, Teenfront.com and attracted around 500,000 unique monthly users before selling it to Rools for reportedly close to £1 million, aged 16.

He later formed a business establishing sunbed and tanning studios inside Tesco stores, founded and later sold his stake in a business providing video screens to the luxury yacht market and started Quick.tv, an online video company that raised seed funding and which is now working on web video ad tech. Bell remains interested in startup investing.

Bell, along with leavers from Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) and Google (NSDQ: GOOG), was hired by News International chief information officer Paul Cheesbrough to inject some of this spirit in to the publisher. Now he says using data to understand customers and constant product iteration are his guiding principles.

“When I joined the organisation, it was traditional IT-oriented,” Bell told me. “It would be a slow process, three to six months, to do a piece of work. Then that team would get disbanded to go and do something else. We’ve moved toward a product stream where we have key products and a team that constantly iterates. It’s about listening to the customer.”

One example, whose original debut pre-dates Bell, is The Times’ iPad edition, which launched fast, alongside the tablet, in the UK and which took a small dose of customer criticism for bugs, which were ironed out in routine updates. By contrast, The Guardian recently launched its first iPad edition around a year and a half after the gadget went on sale.

“We recently introduced an R&D lab,” Bell says. “In a slightly Google-esque manner, every member of our technology team now will spend one twelfth of their time cycling through the innovation lab. It creates a space where they think about problems differently.

“Some of the products coming out of there are very interesting. We’ve been through our first couple of cycles there. We’ve learned something from every product created in the lab - some of those will start to be baked back in to our core apps.”

This kind of “hacking” (of code) is a refreshing alternative to the one which has engulfed News International over the last year.

“Of my team of peers, five or six of us invest in businesses as well,” he says. But News International, which previously invested in digital property classifieds startups, has now sold on those assets, and Bell appears keener that the publisher partner with startups than take equity in them.

Bell cites “working with smaller, agile more companies” like Livefyre, a story comments platform operator which News International took an early bet on enlisting. “Being prepared to work with small startups of best-of-breed is key.”

News Of The World’s closure deprived News International of data on which it could have based a decision to introduce digital fees at the UK’s most popular newspaper.

News Of The World relaunched on the web and iPad for £1.99 a month in September 2010, including with SMS payment - ten months before it was shut amid the phone hacking scandal.

“One of my personal frustrations is we were about to roll out some tests and changes, to switch some of the levers to see how we could actually engage that audience,” News International’s digital product director Nick Bell told me in a Q&A at Wednesday’s Digital Content Monetisation Europe conference.

“We started allowing First Click Free. We were trialling all of those elements. The News Of The World was a great place to do that. It was a brand that was innovative. We learned a huge amount. it’s a shame for us that we didn’t have a chance to see some of the results of tests that were carried out.

“What it proved was that people, even in the red-top space, are willing to pay.” Bell did not quantify NOTW’s digital take-up at the time.

In the meantime, the Sun Online website has notably not joined its deceased stablemate nor its higher-brow Times brethren in implementing news fees dictated by Rupert Murdoch late in 2009. Everything appears to be in a holding pattern. But NOTW may nevertheless prove useful.

“No direct decision has been made around a paywall for The Sun,” Bell told me. “There’s a lot of learnings we can take from the News Of The World. One thing we did learn was that it’s very difficult to have a one-day proposition - you’re constantly trying to recruit that audience on a Sunday. If you look at The Times and Sunday Times, although they’re separate brands, you get access to both.”

News International has introduced tablet and mobile subscriptions of £4.99 per month for The Sun’s apps, but the mature Sun Online website has not got the same kind of refresh that NOTW’s underlying web platform did.

“The Sun is going to be an area of investment for us over the coming months and years,” Bell told me. “We’re really keen to listen to our customers and have a human-centric approach to the designs that go out there.

“News International traditionally took a very one-man view to these things, somebody would come up witha design and that’s what would get rolled out if the editor approved. We now are going through a far more user-centred design approach. That will hopefully mean some of the stuff we come out with will be far more interesting, exiting and relevant.

“Sun Bingo is hugely successful, Dream Team has over a million players - these are brand extensions which do very well for The Sun and people are willing to pay for those in their millions.

The UK’s largest regional newspaper title, the Wolverhampton-based Express & Star, is ending the premium online payment tier it introduced in April 2011, whilst introducing updated paid tablet and smartphone editions.

“The 24 premium service has been withdrawn following a review of the MNA’s digital platforms,” said the new MD of its publisher, Midland News Association (MNA), Phil Inman (via Press Gazette).

Last spring, the paper split its news site in two. Breaking news remained free on the ongoing site, but a new site, Express & Star 24, required fees as part of a bundled pricepoint including newspaper subscription and apps access for £2.34 ($3.61) a week.

MNA debuted new iPad and iPhone apps this week. Reasons for the change are not clear, but there has clearly been a shift under Inman, who joined from rival Northcliffe this January 1. The change points to a recognition that mobile editions are easily chargeable-for whilst free web content remains attractive.

The consumer draw of free apps over paid apps has been well-documented, and so has the rise of in-app payments as a route to making money from those free apps. New research out today predicts that in-app purchases will, in fact, become the most dominant way that app developers will make money in years ahead.

The report, from its IHS Screen Digest division, notes that in-app purchases accounted for about 39 percent of app revenues in 2011, and it predicts that in 2012 that proportion has gone up to 49 percent. By 2015 it will account for 64 percent of all revenues.

In terms of actual value, IHS says that in-app payments were worth $970 million in 2011, and will be worth $5.6 billion in 2015. (Sound too big to you? Please comment below.)

Update: More on why those revenues will be so big. Ian Fogg, head of mobile for IHS Screen Digest, pointed out to paidContent in an email that the $5.6-billion figure “is driven by the vast numbers of new smartphones that will ship over the next few years. As the number of smart devices is so great, the app market revenues will grow greatly, and hence so will the in-app revenues.” He also noted that many pay-to-download apps also feature in-app purchasing options; that will additionally contribute to the total size of in-app revenues. [original article continues]

This represents a big opportunity for app store operators like Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) and Google (NSDQ: GOOG), as well as mobile payments companies like Boku, Zong and PayPal to manage these payments.

And it also represents something of a success, too, considering how much opposition there was to in-app billing when it was first launched by Apple with requirements to pay it 30 percent of each transaction.

“Apple has nailed the mobile gaming and mobile app payment business,” noted Wilhelm Taht, marketing director for mobile social media service Flowd, earlier today. “It’s super frictionless.”

Strangely, the report does not take account of mobile advertising as a route to making money from an app. That could be because the only apps that can actually make any significant money from advertising are those that get the very highest amount of traffic—other long-tail apps that lack scale will face a challenge in trying to use advertising as their main business model.

Today, free apps already have significantly more traffic than paid apps: Nielsen last week noted that consumers mainly use a mixture of these, or a free-only selection of apps; those who only opt for paid apps account for low, single-figure percentages in different categories (around two-three percent). Ironically, paid apps today remain the main way that many of the most successful apps (such as games) are making money.

Free-to-download apps that come with in-app purchasing—so-called “freemium” apps—represented 45 percent of all top-grossing iPhone apps, and 31 percent of the highest-earning Android apps in the U.S.

IHS Screen Digest estimates that some 68 percent of all top-grossing apps had at least some form of “additional content or functionality” available through in-app purchase, which could mean features like extra levels in games, virtual currency to continue playing or extra editions of a publication.

Virtual currency, it says, is the most common form of in-app paid content available today, accounting for 63 percent of all revenues made from in-app purchases.

But while we hear a lot about newspapers and magazines, and increasingly video-based apps looking to in-app payments as a way of getting their users to buy mobile content, overall, this represents a very small part of revenues today: in the UK in Q3 2011, publications accounted for only five percent of in-app payment revenues (no figures for the U.S.), while video accounted for only two percent of in-app revenues in the U.S. and none in the UK.

As the uproar over New York Times public editor Arthur Brisbane’s “truth vigilante” question continues, it’s worth noting that North Korea’s official newspaper, Rodong Singmun, launched an English-language digital version this week.

The English version of the paper is divided into four sections—“Supreme Leaders’ Activities,” “In DPRK,” “Inter-Korean” and “International.” The “Inter-Korean” section consists exclusively of articles criticizing South Korea; 56 of these, with headlines like “Lee Myung Bak Shrieks before Fatal End” and “Foolish Outbursts of Military Warmongers,” have been published since Wednesday.

South Korea’s Korea Times reported on Rodong Singmun‘s English version launch. South Koreans’ access to the website is blocked because the two countries are technically at war, the Korea Times reports, though they were able to access it for a brief time on Tuesday when its IP address changed.

Reading Rodong Singmun‘s articles is a somewhat surreal experience as they are a strange combination of incredibly boring, funny and scary. Following Kim Jong Il’s death, the paper reports (there are some bylines, but not on every article), even animals mourned: A bird “went stiff in death” a few meters from the place where Kim Jong Il once stood; flocks of magpies circled a statue of Kim Il Sung “crying with sorrow” and bears emerged from hibernation:

At that time three bears, a mother and two cubs, appeared on the road and cried in a mournful manner.

Bears live in deep forest and sleeps in a burrow in winter. That day, however, the bears appeared on the road in the daytime, on which Kim Jong Il took his way, and roared for a long time. It was really mysterious.

The NYT’s Media Decoder, which announced the news ahead of the official Barnes & Noble (NYSE: BKS) announcements (here and here), reports:

The Nook edition of People is $9.99 a month; with a one-year subscription, customers will receive a Nook Tablet, a color device with a 7-inch display, for $199, a discount from its regular price of $249. Customers who buy a one-year subscription for the Nook edition of The New York Times for $19.99 a month, which includes access to NYTimes.com (NYSE: NYT), will receive a black-and-white Nook Simple Touch free or a Nook Color for $99.

The Nook Tablet is discounted by only $50, but that brings it down to the price of the Kindle Fire. The Nook Color is heavily discounted, by $100. The Nook Simple Touch is normally $99. The total cost of a one-year People subscription on Nook is $119.88, and the total cost of a one-year NYT subscription on Nook is $239.88.

Barnes & Noble announced last week that it may spin off its Nook business, though CEO William Lynch said in a CNBC (NSDQ: CMCSA) interview that B&N stores and Nook would “continue to have a very symbiotic relationship.” This promotion is intended to showcase Nook Newsstand, which Barnes & Noble sees as one of the fastest growing parts of the Nook business.

More significantly, the promotion opens the door for other retailers—ahem, Amazon—to start offering free or discounted e-readers or tablets with content subscriptions. Nothing was preventing Amazon (NSDQ: AMZN) from doing that before, of course, but I would not be surprised to see it respond now with an offer of its own for Kindle Fire Newsstand subscribers.

It is our understanding that Time Inc. (NYSE: TWX) and Barnes & Noble are sharing the cost of the discounted Nook Tablet that comes with the Nook People subscription. The New York Times says it is “not divulging terms of our agreement with Barnes and Noble.”
