Gannett (NYSE: GCI) Co. has bought The Big Lead and a family of other sports blogs. The company hopes the acquisition, when combined with its existing USA Today properties, will vault it into the major leagues of the online sports scene.

Even while fan-based SB Nation is in the middle of launching 20 regional sports sites, the company has now acquired The Sporting Blog from Sporting News. Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed.

Sports blogging network SB Nation raised $5 million in financing from Accel Partners and Allen & Co., according to VentureWire. The company wouldn’t confirm the news.
