Ping.it aims to help users discover targeted content across the web -- for example, YouTube videos that appeared on Reddit and got the largest number of Facebook likes. The service, in public beta, is still clunky, but worth checking out.

Want to know which YouTube videos were most popular on Reddit? Or what the top stories are across 10 different news sites? Ping.it aims to help with a new web tool that lets users create custom “probes” to surface specific content across the web.

Ping.it, an Oslo, Norway-based startup, has been around since 2009 and has experimented with a number of business models, but it launched in public beta this week as a content discovery service. Ping.it’s main feature is “probes,” which it describes on its blog as “small apps which go out and retrieve information from across the Web on behalf of the user. They can be created, edited, shared and subscribed to – all by Ping.it users.”

“I see Ping.it as a new step forward in content discovery using elements from traditional RSS Readers and social media,” founder Marius Lian told me. “Google Reader was discontinued for a reason – time to move on.”

Here are a few of the probes that users have created already:

Top 3 news stories per hour from the top 10 news sites

Reddit music videos from YouTube with more than 98 percent thumbs-up and more than 10,000 Facebook likes

New on Netflix top 100

Users can subscribe to existing probes or create their own. There are a number of limitations, however:

Right now, there’s a very slim choice of metrics you can use to filter a probe. You can filter based on keyword, Facebook likes and YouTube likes, but there’s not an option yet to, for example, filter based on how many times a story has been tweeted, or how many times it’s been shared on Facebook. Those features are coming, though: Lian tells me that Ping.it is already internally testing “number of tweets, Facebook shares and Facebook rating, our own invention: just divide likes by shares, and the more likes per share, the better).

Creating a probe is not intuitive: It’s not obvious how to filter for popularity on YouTube, until you actually look at an example of an already created probe that does this. Luckily, each public probe can be “copied” and then modified. Lian says it will be easier soon.

Ping.it is a web application only. Once you create a probe, it is added to a “collection” that you can only access through Ping.it’s website. And while Ping.it relies on RSS to create probes, you can’t actually create a probe and then subscribe to it through an RSS reader — again, it can only be accessed through Ping.it. Mobile access is coming soon, Lian said.

Overall, it’s still clunky, Ping.it is worth checking out — particularly as a way to stay on top of emerging viral content.

Viral news site BuzzFeed has selected one-time Spin editor Steve Kandell to oversee its plans to expand its selection of New Yorker-style longform pieces. The move promises more prestige for BuzzFeed but it's too soon to say if it makes good business sense.

BuzzFeed, the upstart viral news site, has finally selected an editor to oversee its ambitions to produce “high-quality narrative journalism for the social web”. The choice is Steve Kandell, a former editor-in-chief of Spin magazine who also worked as an editor at Maxim and Blend.

Kandell’s appointment comes as BuzzFeed, best known for cute kitten collages, is ramping up its ambitions to be a force for serious journalism. To that end, it has created partnerships with the New York Times and and brought on high-profile hires like Doree Shafrir from Rolling Stone as executive editor and Ben Smith from Politico.

BuzzFeed has already shown its longform aspirations with 10,000-word essays on topics like the military, Mitt Romney’s father and “Can You Die from a Nightmare?”. Kandell will work with in-house and freelance writers to expand those offerings and, in his words, show that “conversation-provoking longform journalism and profiles that have long been a staple of magazines are as vital as they’ve ever been”.

The site’s longform goals are intriguing because the genre is associated with prestigious print magazines like the New Yorker and not the viral, hyper-active fare that makes up a typical BuzzFeed page (see typical BuzzFeed cat image at right). Will the site be able to overcome the belief of many writers and readers that the best longform originates in print?

There is also the question of whether longform journalism is economically viable for BuzzFeed, or if the project is instead a labor of love. We’re hoping it will be both in the long term but, for now, it will be interesting to see how the “native advertisers” that are BuzzFeed’s bread and butter respond to the site’s larger literary ambitions.

To learn more about BuzzFeed’s longform plans, see “Kings of longform: New Yorker, the Atlantic … and BuzzFeed?”

Social news site Buzzfeed has acquired Kingfish Labs, a New York startup that processes natural language on Facebook to determine user interests. Buzzfeed said it plans to apply Kingfish's technology to optimize ad targeting for its brand clients on social networks.

Can ads go as viral as squeal-inducing animal pictures? Social news site Buzzfeed is angling to try and its bet is that its new acquisition, Kingfish, will help it get there faster.

The company on Thursday said that it had purchased the small New York startup for an undisclosed amount (in its first acquisition), adding three new technical hires.

Kingfish Labs, which has raised $500,000 from Lerer Ventures and Softbank Capital (both of which are also Buzzfeed investors), was launched about a year ago to process natural language on Facebook to figure out user interests and match up members for dating.

Jon Steinberg, Buzzfeed’s president and COO, said the company plans to apply that underlying technology in its efforts to create and seed social ads for its brand clients.

“A big part of what we do is extend those [brand's] campaigns and seed them in paid units on Facebook and Twitter,” he said. “We’re going to use that same technology to determine the interests of Facebook’s users… and target Sponsored Stories more granularly, based on those interests.”

Aside from sharing investors, Buzzfeed co-founder Jonah Peretti also worked with Kingfish co-founders Jeff Revesz and Rob Fishman at Huffington Post. Revesz and the other two technical former Kingfishers will join Buzzfeed’s engineering team but Fishman will not be joining the company.
