Google, Microsoft Will Drive Next-Gen Mobile Web Apps Innovation
The next generation of mobile web applications will be driven by Google (NSDQ: GOOG) and Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT), according to Nick Jones, vice president of Gartner: “It’s taken 10 years of experimentation on the static web to come up with sites like Facebook, MySpace and YouTube…Those were 10 years during which the barriers for entry were very low
It's "interesting" that he didn't include Apple among the drivers. I'm sure that Steve Jobs won't be pleased.
I'm most intrigued to find out whether INSTALLED apps or 'software as a service' will dominate the mobile environment.
I agree with Thomas. Give me a break. Microsoft? They've been beating this horse for years and have yet to produce anything compelling. Regarding the Android effort, I don't see how one more Linux OS variant is going to change anything, even with Google behind it. The issues run much deeper, and they have to do with the carriers giving up control, which they are slowly doing. Apple forced them to give up control of their pipe with the iPhone, and so we finally got an innovative mobile device. The apps coming with the SDK are going to be even cooler.
Most analysts dissed Apple in the 80's with the Mac, and they will continue doing so. It is not in their interest to support anyone but the dominant players. It's kind embarrassing in this case, though. Microsoft fueling innovation? Give me a break.
