IPL To Be Held In South Africa?
Citing franchisee sources, Indiantelevision.com is reporting that South Africa has trumped England as the venue for the Indian Premier League, the popular 20-20 cricket league that has been forced to go overseas after the central government and key Indian states declined to assure security citing general elections that are scheduled around the same time as the tournament.
Yesterday, the Mumbai High Court had lifted the injunction on the Board of Control For Cricket in India, or BCCI, allowing the body to discuss television rights with channels other than Multi Screen Media Ltd, the incumbent broadcaster.
Worried about potential losses as the league is pushed out of India, the franchisees of the league are turning to the BCCI, Business Standard reported today.
Regarding the change in venue of the IPL outside India, I would like to ask Lalit Modi, Shah Rukh Khan, Preity Zinta and Vijay Mallya if they will be casting their vote? And by extension, are any of the Indian players and IPL staff going to cast their vote. I guess not. So, in essence, these people are declaring that they are willingly, not interested in being a part of the democratic electoral process of their nation. Also, since the players are contractually obliged to go and play at the chosen venue, which in this case is outside India, and the staff is obliged to be there as a part of their job, essentially IPL is disenfranchising them! This is shameful!
I request TV channels to please ask Lalit Modi this question when they interview him next – is he going to cast his vote in this elections or not? Is he going to allow the staff and players to travel back to India to cast their vote? How can he deprive the players and staff their most fundamental right as citizens of this country?
IPL MOVE TO SOUTH AFRICA IS MOST WELCOME. WE IN SOUTH AFRICA CAN'T WAIT. WE WELCOME ALL CRICKET LOVING PEOPLE FROM AROUND THE WORLD ESPECIALLY THE FANS FROM INDIA. COME ENJOY YOUR STAY WITH US.
This is already old news and was given on the IPL blog ipl-cricket-2009.blogspot.com
i think there was no security assures and indian govement should have at least try to host the ipl this years. as this would have helped indian govement e.g. more money (tax), change views of tourest and more but no indian goverment didn't. i am anger and sad but can't do anything.
i hate the SOUTH AFRICA taking all the glory of cricket leaving us pakisanis and indians nothing.
ipl must be held in india to check the ability of our own security system.it would give us economic power and sport related competition and interest in children to take part in sport.
