IRCTC Launches Mobile Application For Booking Railway Tickets
The IRCTC has launched a Java based mobile application called IRCTCmobile, for booking train tickets, reports the Hindu. The application allows users to check, via GPRS, for trains between two stations, availability of tickets and book tickets using credit and cash cards. The tickets, however, will be delivered to an address provided by the user. The application is by Sam Pitroda’s C-SAM. More here.
With a number of mobile applications being launched – we’ve covered 3-4 so far, and there are many more in the offing – how many will users install? As had been mentioned once, there is a case for one big application, or for a handset manufacturer to pre-install select applications. Also, data plans will have to be rationalized. I was informed by Airtel customercare earlier this month that their pay-per-use GPRS plan, called Net On Phone, doesn’t allow third party applications. The other plan, called Mobile Office, is Rs. 499 a month…
While on IRCTC, Moneycontrol.com reports that Reliance Communications has tied up with Itz Cash to enable payment for Railway tickets via Reliance Mobile World.
mobile – its every where and i like it.
just now recieved a private beta invite for a new mobile sns-
http://www.indyarocks.com .i like the mobile functionality .
is this also what orkut is planning to do.
Hey,
Sounds cool but how many gprs connections ?
frankly i am not impressed by this new feature simply because IRCTC first of all is unable to give good service in the internet front. 75% of the time the site says , "unable to retrieve due to communication failure", the site is usable only 25% of the time, when IRCTC is not able to address this issue, why the hell do they want to add more services, its utter waste. It should also increase the number of Customer care numbers, having just one telephone number will not help in any way. And as varun says, the number of people using mobiles with GPRS connections is very less so no point anyway.
Kishore and Varun: don't you think the number of services available on the mobile desktop need to increase for GPRS to take off? People just aren't aware and hence think that they don't have the need. Just think of the number of parents who took to the net, simply because they needed to use matrimonial sites, or the most of the working population that needed to search for jobs…I think first the services need to be launched, then awareness created, and then people will take to it.
Can i know from where i can get the cash card i.e itz cash card so tha i can also book my tickets
Hi All,
Our client is thinking of rolling out a Mobile Air & Hotel reservations system for the Asian market, and we're thinking of piloting in India. The reservation system would offer SMS & Browser-based solution. Based on your comments, browser based solution will likely not take off. From a user perspective, would you use a Mobile Booking System to source for flights & hotel if mobile infrastructure were not an issue? Price point of an air ticket is higher, the smaller screens make booking harder, and SMS would not provide enough data to make an expensive decision like air or international travel.
Thoughts?
thanks,
Desmond
IRCTCmobile is now available on its website. I have personally used it. Once downloaded, it is really fast. The user experience is much better than the website itself.
Kishore,
I was also geting the error “unable to retrieve due to communication failure” many times when I tried to book a ticket. I found that it happened whenever I chose the quota to be 'ladies' instead of general. Now, I never select 'ladies' quota and I don't see the error any more.
