We've had this capability for nearly a year (the ability to do local search using GPS to pinpoint your current location). We've integrated it in the mobile browser and leverage HTTP so you don't have to pay the carriers for your location. In addition we can change the browser menu structure based on the users context (Who, What, Where) which allows operators to integrate their current web services directly to their mobile customers. Thanks for bringing this to my attention Peter – I welcome all search & discovery companies to contact me. As you can see, I cover mobile search for MoCo and there's a lot of players – besides just the ususal suspects – in this space. Please contact me with news & views anytime. We can always take the discussion off-line…
This space has been crowded for a while, actually. It would be interesting to see how the new entrants plan to differentiate themselves.
Microsoft has had Live Search out there, for a while now, too. There's a client version (http://wls.live.com), as well as one that can bee access from a mobile browser (http://m.live.com).
the most logical evolution of lo mo innovation imo would be for a user to conduct a local search on desktop with ability to send the result direct to their phone portal's home page in a MMS type foramt – bypassing the sms interface….since INSP has the carrier portal contracts and a good online local search product it would make sense for them to take the lead in this area
