Raja Sets Majestic Target Of 500 M Internet Users, 100 M Broadband Lines By 2012; Snow In July?
Another day, another target for broadband usage in India. What makes it particularly irrelevant is that there will be elections in India shortly, and a new minister (maybe) will mean further delays, and new targets: Nevertheless, Telecom Minister A. Raja, speaking at a conference in Kuala Lumpur, has outlined his Digital Vision – by 2012, they’re setting a target of 500 million Internet users, with over 100 million broadband connections and 100 million broadband enabled devices. “India 500–100–100 should be the country
There's a little catch in this story. In India, 'broadband' is defined as a minimum of 256 kbps, unlike the rest of the world, where it is 512 kbps. Despite this, there's not even a snowball's chance in hell that we'll get anywhere close to that number. I'll bet that we're not even going to hit 50 M internet users in 2012 (that's a total of 60% growth over current figures!).
Declaring targets is easiest job, specially when you are not in the run…ask him abt policies conducive to such growth and he will start cutting corners!!!
