RIM To Buy Mobile Software Firm Chalk Media For $17.2 Million
Research in Motion (NSDQ: RIMM) will buy mobile software firm Chalk Media for $23.1 million Candian dollars ($17.2 million) in cash, the companies announced today. RIM has also agreed to lend the Vancouver-based company $2.2 million Canadian dollars ($1.8 million) to provide the 10 year old tech firm with working capital until the acquisition goes through. This could be a smart move depending on how they use them.
Rim's weakness compared to Android and the iPhone would appear to be the lack of interesting software produced for them.
Thats partly because of the arcane way the software is compiled which results in each phone requiring a separate app. But regardless having an in house development team building interesting applications could help change the perceived lack of interesting applications.
And maybe having an in house development team will cause Rim to rethink some of their current practices to make them more developer friendly.
