Viacom18 To Launch An Online Music Store
Viacom18 plans to launch an online music store reports TV18 group publication Moneycontrol, though no details are specified, since the report focuses on an MTV India revamp after the channel was transferred to Viacom18, the TV18-Viacom JV earlier this year. The channel wants to remain the “icon of cool”, and plans to incorporate interactivity; tie-ups are planned with Cafe Coffee Day, campus hangouts and (my favorite concept) user generated content. Apparently, some research has revealed that youth put “style before content, tribe before the individual”.
Ooh, brainwave: how about another social networking site for those tribes. And this one with style! Anyway, with the situation for music content online still in a flux a music store doesn’t seem to be a good idea to me. How many people from India buy music online anyway? As an aside, a friend and I were discussing the other other day that digital distribution has heralded the end of the album – it’s all about singles now. What do you think?
I think people preffer free downloads. Piracy is far away to be stopped and why to pay money for something when you can have it free? :)
About the album vs singles…. lately western pop artists are promoting as singles more than 50% of the songs from an album and they to their job so well that it makes you love and buy the album anyway

The fact lies in the point where todays youth stands when it comes to online buying. Whether, the youth really do online shoppings. The fact being that with the trend of technology diffusion taking place at a very fast rate, the Indian population really is a very encouraging factor for the companies to invest in such an industry. And that i am sure that this is going to be one of the big projects in the music industry.
Keeping the piracy levels in mind, do you really think that the urban youth dont like the quality music. Although, there is a piracy level in the market, but then there is always a niche market that you are addressing to.
I believe the project will be a success provides the company markets its product in the proper way.
